Let them be the overlord. Play a terrible combination of two heroes (no healers!). Set up the first map. Watch with satisfaction as s/he stomps you over and over again, feeling like a champ.

I tried this and let my wife choose my two starting heroes. She chose Tomble and Jain for me, so I naturally let Jain be the Wildlander and Tomble the thief. We started with First Blood. I figured that with the advantage the heroes have in that map I probably had a good chance of winning. Well, she definitely surprised me! I killed off all but one of her goblins. Thinking I had things under control, I let my guard down and set up mainly to do searches. Well, her ettin packed a mighty nasty punch for Jain, dropping her down to minimal health (combined with the last goblin). It was at that moment that I made a noobish mistake and ran Jain to the edge near the exit, while keeping Tomble around to fight. Long story short, she was able to effectively keep both of us knocked down while she respawned her goblin archers and ran them off the map, one by one. She also had her ettin blocking Jain from Tomble, keeping them separated so I was never able to use a revive on the other. It came down to the last health of the ettin, but she beat me, fair and square.

We both left winners after that. Her, because she felt that she could actually enjoy the game and also that I did not let her win, and me, because even though I lost, I felt satisfied with the level of "handicap" the game has naturally in it without having to bend the rules for players.

Edit: We also played the first encounter of Death on a Wing with the same setup. I faired a little better, but only because of the awareness and mobility of the proposed group.

Another alternative is to play D2E as a traditional RPG, where the OL administers the game, and is not an opponent. The D2E Knowledge, Perception, Might, and Willpower skills work well in non-combat RPG skill checks. Do a search on "D&D adventures free" and you should find D&D adventures you can adapt to D2E.
