FFG officially announced the Conversion Kit is for sale:

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3459

Looking at the promo pic, I'm a little surprised that they didn't follow the pattern the 8 Heroes in the base set follow, where the Warriors have a red background, the Mages a golden one, Scouts with green, and Healers with blue. Guess too much photoshopping for that?

Would you prefer the plain colored backgrounds?

I wish the new heroes had full artwork like many of the classic heroes.

Still hoping to hear of some sort of minis solution for buyers without D1e.

That, and it's the new pattern. A hero belongs to a specific Archetype, and the plain background is that Archetype's color, so it becomes very easy to spot. Not trying to complain, just something I noticed. I can't wait for the variety this will add to our games

I was about to ask what the three cards in the middle were. The answer is in the news on FFG website: it's the three familiars for Pico, Skye and I-don't-remember-who.

In some cases, I'm not sure it would be just the background (although that would be the major part); for a few of them, it's like the whole "aura" of the character art goes along with the background. For example, the magenta hue in Varikas' card seems to kind of reflect on him; the greenish hue of Challara, the icy blue hue for Zyla and Shiver, etc.

Obviously not the case for EVERY 1E hero, but there are a few.

Oddly enough, all of the Monsters have the new backgrounds, just none of the heroes. The art assets must have just been cleaner on those.

A lot of the heroes are erfed, but I guess that's to be expected with how wounds are in 2nd Ed. For example, Shiver no longer has Aura (even though it was introduced in the kit with a couple monsters), instead he has "Monsters must spend 1 additional movement point to enter a space adjacent to you". Karnon's 5 black dice (i.e. better attacker) was completely morphed to "Each time a monster attacks you, after rolling the dice, you may suffer 1 fatigue to cancel 1 surge on the attack." Not sure how that reflects a heavy hitter, but there you have it.

Would require *cough* someone *cough* to scan them all in. Kind of defeats the purpose though of selling the kit though, if you can get all of them scanned?

I recommend you reconsider. If you like D2E, then the Conversion Kit is a must buy, even without the minis from D1E. It adds soooo many more monsters and heroes that the variety is very much needed if you play a lot. The 8 base heroes get kind of stale after a few games, and even worse, the handful of base monsters gets very tedious and boring. The CK adds wonderful variety to the game, and I'd play it with proxies even if I didn't have the base figs.

I'm with shnar, even without the minis, the Conversion Kit gives tons of options as long as you're ok with using proxies. And more than likely, whatever their mini solution is, it will probably include buying the conversion kit separately anyway.
