It always seems that my gaming tends to be based on 3 players due to people dropping out when trying to organise larger games.

a lot of games we play 3 ways are better with bigger numbers (catan, risk etc)

does anyone know any games that are about the same complexity and a couple of hours of fun that work well 3 player and dont have the problem of 2 players being able to gang up massivly on the 3rd

I have looked through my collection to check if I know games where 2 players. would not gang up against the third and my two best guesses would be Airlines Europe and Notre Dame.

However games usually assume that every Player plays for himself, so it will be difficult to be protected by the rules against one Player sacrifizing his chances to win.

Easy:
Maria
Middle-Earth Quest
Arkham Horror (or any other full cooperative game)
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization

I took "couple of hours" literally, though. None of these can easily be finished under 3 hours.

I think Carcassonne works best with 3 players, as you can still build up decent sized roads/cities, and can expect to get at least some pieces you need. Playing with 4 or more seems to make it far more random so I usually focus on completing much smaller roads/cities because it's too risky to build bigger.

Look at The Road to Canterbury. It's max is 3-player. I would also recommend The Castles of Burgundy and Trajan. We play both with 2 or 3 players and they play really well with those numbers.

Good luck!

I find Catan best at 3, but to each their own

I think if you can handle Catan, you can handle Troyes. Get that.

IMO, the best game for three is Amyitis. I haven't found many as balanced with three as this one; and besides, it's a damn fine design.

These are some of the games I have (that haven't been mentioned yet) where I don't mind if I have three instead of four or five. If I prefer more, I won't list it:

Thunderstone Advance
Beowulf: The Movie
Through the Desert
Glory to Rome
Lords of Vegas
Wasabi!
DungeonQuest
At the Gates of Loyang

Pizza Theory was specifically designed for three, but is a bit abstract, and fairly short.
König von Siam is GREAT with 3 or 4, also good with 2.

I have barely played
After the Flood and haven't played God's Playground, but they sound more like epic games, but I am unclear about if they encourage or allow ganging up. Both designed for 3.

You might want to take a look at The End of the Triumvirate...while it's out of print, there seems to be many copies available on Amazon, as well as in the BGG Marketplace (a couple of the BGG sellers appear to live in the UK)...

Le Havre is probably best with three.

A ton of games that max out with four players are balanced with three.

Thebes, Neuland, Thurn & Taxis, At the Gates of Loyang.

Le Havre I was a bit worried when this wasn't mentioned earlier. I wanted to include the link.

This is probably my group's favorite game for three players.

Surprised no one's mentioned Carolus Magnus yet. The game is pretty much built specifically for three players. It's very abstract, though, so if you're looking for much theme you won't get it here. I think the game is excellent though.
