Usually when we play games at my place I put on a diverse selection of instrumental music, mostly stuff from action and adventure film soundtracks. I like a little background music when we play and I think it adds a lot of atmosphere without being too distracting.

However, we have a game of Fortress America planned soon and this time I'd like to make some new play lists for each players turn.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what music to include. I was thinking of the following:

U.S. Player:
America, F*ck Yeah. by Trey Parker
Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen

Eastern Invader:
National Anthem of the Soviet Union.

... and that's about all I got so far. I'm out of good ideas as to what music would fit the theme and mood of this game.

Does anyone have any ideas to help fill out these lists?
Anything to recommend for the Southern or Eastern invader soundtracks?

Thanks.

I wish I had some better suggestions, but you might want to look at the lyrics of "Born In The USA" first.

I know "Born in the USA" is actually an anti-war song. However, I'm just using it for background music.

Bruce quite clearly sings "USA" 17 times in the song, including 4 times within the first minute! As background music it fits well with the US Player's turn and the tongue-in-cheek jingoism mood that I'm looking for.

Also, misinterpreting the song is part of the fun of including it.

How about instrumental pieces?

I know of a few ones that are rather catchy from PC games:

Russian:

Freedom Fighters

Command & Conquer Hell March

A bit hard rock though...

For the Southern Invader:

Theme from El Mariachi (I love the scene where one of the brothers turns out to have modified his guitar cases into machine guns).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCmMDd8T5fg

For the Western Invader:
Theme from Akira

For the Eastern Invader:
Official European Union Theme

Queen - Radio Ga Ga
I just love the hypnotic beat underneath the melody and they are british anyway.

Rammstein - Die Sonne
Love the industrial undertone of the music. Fits perfectly with totalitarian Europe.

To me, these "what music to go with game x" threads make as much sense as "what outfits to wear when playing game x". I don't dress up or do thematic soundtracks, I just play the game.

We all have our own taste in music - if I were to put on some aggressive jazz, I'd dig it but a classical fan might find it distracting. Same deal as if somebody put on some punk rock that they felt was suitable while I was playing at their house; it would annoy me.

Sphere. Jake here, I am not familiar with the term "aggressive jazz"; care to enlighten me. I hold a degree music theory and composition, but most of my studies were classical and my jazz tastes, with the eexception of Coltrane, are still embedded in my infancy: The Big Bands of 40's.

I wasn't talking about a particular style of jazz when I said aggressive, just thinking in terms of what I might pick if I were trying to match music to a wargame like Fortress America. Interesting that you say classical plus Coltrane. Do you listen to late 'Trane too, or do you stick to the earlier stuff?

For the US side, the entire TOP GUN soundtrack comes to mind, as well as "Eye of the Tiger," "Final Countdown," and "Rock you Like a Hurricane." I know some of these bands are European, but as a child of the cold war 80's, they definitely stick out in my memory as symbolic of the era.

For the invading sides, you might try:

Laibach, "Geburt Einer Nation" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI4wL1n_cOc&feature=related

KMFDM, "Liebeslied" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtzkdXjVKMA&feature=related

Front 242, "Headhunter" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPpUFBVSyWs

None of this is instrumental, but it should set the tone.

I realized I didn't address the Western or Southern fronts.

.

I understand, those kinds of approaches to music (aggressive, passive, etc) can be taken for ANY genre, just thought I had missed something. Not so much late 'Trane, mostly earlier. Just like my games, I bend toward themes when playing, but when designing I lean toward abstracts. "I'm so confused!" shake

BTW: When playing naval games, the track to "Victory At Sea" is still a natural!

Simple. Apocalypse Now.

One of the iconic scenes from the movie has US Air Cavalry soldiers attacking the Vietcong to strains of that Wagnerian epic... cool
