The main game only allows you to make only one meld and one capture per turn.

I like to play a variation wherein when you capture a word, you may use that word to make any number of words (instead of just one). Each new word you make must follow the rules of the game (not be a plural or root form of the original word) and must use at least one card from your hand. Bonuses as outlined in the rulebook apply to these words. After capturing, you may make as many melds from your hand as possible.

Furthermore, let's say Bob has captured Carol's word CANDY, and made two new words utilizing letters in his hand, playing BRAND and ICY. Carol may, on her turn, capture one or both of these words, but must use all letters that are captured. For example, she may not take the D from brand, ICY and an E from her to hand to make DICEY, unless she also uses the letters B, R, A and N and letters from her hand to make a new word.

I think this allows for more fluid and interesting play, with cards going back and forth almost every hand.
