Hello and welcome to the new game of Descent, Second Edition! This game will last for an entire campaign.

Player list:

Moderator:
Sethala
Overlord:
Daemonis

Player 1:
Ackbar117
Player 2:
Altered Carbon
Player 3:
aubinouk
Player 4:
nathanscott4

Rules:

Bold your orders! Non-bolded orders will be treated as commentary and will be ignored by me. I welcome discussion/tactical planning but I need to differentiate game moves and fluff at first glance.

No modifying orders/inserting stuff in the middle of posts once posted! If you have a follow-up to your post, add it in a new post.

Please reread your posts before submitting. I can stand some typos but give me too many and my eyes start to hurt after a while :( and yes, I do enforce it.

If someone makes an illegal/invalid action (i.e. against the rules of the game), all later orders, rolls etc. become invalid and the game rewinds to that point.

Post "End turn" after your turn, or something similar. Also, the last hero posts "Heroes done". If someone doesn't end their turn, it ends automatically after 2 hours. This is simply to help me update and speed up the game.

Maximum delay is 48 hours. The timer is off on weekends and holidays. This is flexible. If you know you can't make it/have an IRL problem/have a local holiday, PM me. If you know you can't continue playing, let me know so I can find a replacement. This is OK with me, given the commitment this campaign requires. Stalling isn't. Additionally, if a hero player will be gone, he may offer to let another hero player act for him; this isn't required, but it will help keep the game moving.

Only actions taken within the last 24 hours can be rewound/interrupted. Exceptions only if you PM me beforehand. I want to avoid unnecessary slowdowns.

The Overlord may request slo-mo mode at any time. During slo-mo mode, the heroes should only post what they do up until the first time a die roll is made (either for an attack, an ability, etc.) The Overlord is free to interrupt the hero turn at any point, "rewinding" the game in order to play a trap card or something similar. If the Overlord declines, or after 48 hours, the hero turn will continue; in such a case I'll make the die roll to help keep things moving.

If a roll is made with too many dice, only the "first" dice (reading left to right) are counted, and any dice past that are discarded.

Information:

We'll use these codes, paste them as your dice in the GeekRoller:

Blue Attack Die:
1custom6{iid:1311394;iid:1311395;iid:1311396;iid:1311397;iid:1311398;iid:1311399}

Red Power Die:
1custom6{iid:1311403;iid:1311403;iid:1311403;iid:1311404;iid:1311405;iid:1311406}

Yellow Power Die:
1custom6{iid:1311411;iid:1311412;iid:1311413;iid:1311414;iid:1311415;iid:1311416}

Brown Light Armor Die:
1custom6{iid:1311400;iid:1311400;iid:1311401;iid:1311401;iid:1311401;iid:1311402}

Silver Medium Armor Die:
1custom6{iid:1311407;iid:1311407;iid:1311407;iid:1311408;iid:1311409;iid:1311410}

Black Heavy Armor Die:
1custom6{iid:1311390;iid:1311390;iid:1311390;iid:1311391;iid:1311392;iid:1311393}

Note: Roller will allow max. 3 kinds of custom dice due to character limit. If you have 4+ different dice, split them into 2 rolls.

PLEASE include a commentary (e.g. roll title) in the roll, it'll get rid of the annoying code (it's still visible beneath the post if you really need to)!

(See the recruitment/advice thread for dice examples/link to testing forum)

Descriptions:

I am a fluff description, brave heroes. Italicized text will tell you about your surroundings and give you hints on what dangers and rewards award you in the immediate area. But beware, as looks can sometimes be misleading!

This is a game mechanics text. Big Ugly Monster hits Player for 16 damage -3 armor, Player is knocked out. (no, not really)

Normal text is my commentary.

The maps will be posted every turn, possibly with arrows and markings indicating moved figures/attacks/whatever. A text summary of stats/visible cards/etc. will be attached.

If you like it, thumb it ;)

Note: This post, including the rules, may change during the game. It is in your interest to check the OP once in a while. If the rules change, they won't be retroactive.

Ok, let's get started!

First order of business - do we want to use the conversion kit or not? I personally don't have my copy yet, but I should be getting it later this week.

If we use it, I'll let each player pick an archetype and give the player 3 heroes of that archetype to pick from. After picking a hero, the player is free to pick whichever class they want.

If we don't use the conversion kit, since there's so few heroes, the players will just have free choice.

The overlord will simply have free choice of which monsters to use from the conversion kit if we use it.

Thank you, Sethala, for getting this up so quickly.

I don't have the Conversion Kit yet, and I won't be getting it anytime soon. Even if all the info is available in the spreadsheets, I think we can do just fine without it for this campaign. I vote against the Conversion Kit.

Characters

I also would rather not use the conversion kit. Not excited to do the random character draw and worry a bit about the balance of the monsters.

I think I'd like to play a scout/wild lander.

Alright, it looks like there's enough votes not to use the conversion kit.

Admittedly, it'll take me a bit to get things like maps and such worked out (thankfully, Pierzasty has offered to help mentor me), but while I get things planned, I'd like the hero players to select which heroes and classes you plan to use. Feel free to discuss with each other as much as you like.

I would enjoy the conversion kit, in large part the monster variety, but am fine eitehr way.

As for roles, I am flexible and will fill whatever roll is unloved.

Ah, Skeleton King Leoric.

And, there's no specific order for picking characters. If there's a dispute, I'll randomly pick someone to get first pick.

Then i will take Leoric the Necromancer

If anyone really wants to play him or the necro we can talk

Leoric having been on his 'extended leave' from the university for many years has found an affinity with the undead. He has culitvated that ability to help him defeat the forces of evil, and now sets his sights on whatever evil has risen to attack the areas of aryhn.

Ok, hear me out:

It looks like LoneCoder has said he wants to play a Wildlander, though we don't know if s/he wants to Jain Fairwood or Tomble Burrowell.

Ackbar117 has selected Leoric the Necromancer.

That leaves the Fighter and Healer roles open (unless we feel like doubling up). Looking at the two fighter characters, Grisban's Hero Ability is pretty weak, and even his Heroic Feat is not as strong as others out there. My wife would not let me back in the house if I choose to play an elf, so I'll pass on selecting a fighter because of the lackluster choice.

Inseatd I'll fill a true healing role and select

Avric Albright the Disciple

That evil is lurking, there is no doubt. It will take conviction and unwavering faith for the shadow to be banished. Avric grabs his trusty shield and plunges into the darkness to meet his destiny.

I can't wait to get playing! Thanks so much for steeing up and running this!!

I played some D2 with my local gaming group, and we had some rules questions I'd propose we iron out before they become an issue:

1) Does the necromancer's reanimate get his activation the turn he is summoned (after the necromancer hero has finished his activation)? We played no, the reanimate activated the following game turn, unless other effects allow him to act immediately.

2) Is the nercomancer's reanimate allowed to take two move actions (forgoing his attack action)? We played yes.

3) How does the Shadow Dragon's breath attack work (or any other similar attack)? Does it have to be in a straight line, can it zigzag, bend around corners, or form a T or a L? We had no idea and no wording to base any decision off, so rolled a d6.

4) Can the shadow dragon's attack (or any other 6-space monster)originate from any adjacent square, or only from one of the two "ends"? I avoided this by not launching the breath attack from the "side" cause it felt wrong, but seemed legal.

5) How does duel wielding weapons work? The bezerker's weapon mastery (2 exp skill) makes it unclear. We thought that the attacker would have to pick one weapon to make the attack with, and the only "benefit" to duel wielding was to have an option to choose from. The bezerker's ability implied to us that he would get to attack with both weapons or add their dice pools together somehow, which seemed brokenly wrong.

Thanks a lot!

1)As far as i knew since the familiar can go at any point he should be able to go during the turn he is summoned, otherwise the hero just wasted an action if the OL attacks and kills the reanimate the turn it is summoned and you get nothing out of it.

2)The reanimate can never take 2 actions of the same type, just like monsters it gets 1 attack and 1 move, and since i don't have dash or frenzy to play i can only ever get that.

3)I would say it was meant to be a straight line, straight ahead but that is just me.

4)I believe it would be any adjacent square since just like in D1 you are still adjacent, facing doesn't matter.

5)You can't attack with both weapons you just gain the ability to add more damage if you use 2 weapons, at least that is how I interpret it from the rules, since the rules specically state you can't attack with 2 weapons at once, you just get to choose.

It's not a wasted action if it sucks up OL activations, it's at the very least like a damage sponge. As we saw it, the ehro was spending one action to get a move and attack out of one action if it could activate the same turn. I'm happy to go either way, though.

Monsters can double move, they just can not double attack. In fact, the D2 zombies specifically have a rule that forbids the second movement (shambling).

I tend to agree but don't mind as long as we know beforehand

I agree as well.

How do you gain the ability to do more damage? Do you roll the power dice from the extra weapon? Can you activate the second weapon's surges?

How I'm going to rule these:

1. Yes, there's no requirement of needing a familiar "alive" at the start of your turn to use it, and the reanimate doesn't have a specific rule for itself to say it can't activate the turn it's summoned.

2. No, his card specifically says one move and one attack.

3. It's a bit hazy, but my thinking is that the wording of the ability would be different if it meant a straight line. You can trace any path, but it does have to be a path starting from the initial target (so you could hit the target square, go two spaces west, and then one space northeast to make a kind of T-shape, but you can't make a straight line that extends one space east and two spaces west of the target, since you can't trace a path on those squares).

4. There's no special exception to which squares aren't reachable by the dragon, so it can attack any space adjacent, even to the direct sides.

5. I'm guessing the wording may be a holdover from a previous edition that allowed dual-wielding and wasn't fixed when they got rid of those rules. The weapon mastery just means you can't have a non-weapon (such as a shield) in your offhand.

There is nothing about the familiar that says he can't move and attack on the turn he is brought in. It would be a wasted turn to not get to do anything with it, especially when you get the ability to blow up the reanimate, if i was the OL i would go after it every turn it came out, causing the hero to waste the fatigue and the action, leaving the hero with only 1 action to do each turn and severly crippling the heroes.

I forgot about the monsters having 2 actions just not being able to attack twice.

You gain the ability to do more damage just with the surge ability with weapons mastery.

Hello All! Looking forward to a great campaign and crushing the vile overlord.

Quick question... I own the game (just played last night actually) but will probably be taking most of my turns from work. Anyone know of any resources for the cards and such on the web that can be used? Manager may get a little upset if I have it set up at my cube.

If not, I will pick a Hero when I get home, but I am good with either of the remaining Characters.

No, his card specifically says one move and one attack.

I believe that his card says he is treated as a figure. Then specifies he can only make one attack (without mentioning move actions). That's the text on the FFG preview, but I'll have to look into it tonight when I get home from work. I'm not trying to be argumentative, and am happy to go with whatever ruling you decide on.

I appreciate your quick decisions, and appreciate clearing this up before the game!

By the way, for item and skill purchases, I'm going to have both sides purchasing blind. I'll PM all the hero players with a list of items they can purchase after the quest, and they'll PM me what items and skills they're buying. Similarly, the Overlord will PM me what card he's buying for the deck. Once I receive PMs from everyone, I'll post what each player purchased, and the winner of the previous quest will pick the new one, if applicable.
