A full game of AHD lasts 40 turns. If the South can't achieve victory in the early stage of the game, 40 turns is more than sufficient for the North to win the game in my experience.

Therefore I came up with this variant rule:
The player who thinks he can win with the North in the least number of turns may play with that side. Bidding alternates until accepted.

What do you think?

An end turn game marker should be designed. Weren't there november 1864 presidential elections, that historically could end the war? A rule could be designed for that as well.

You using the basic rules? Or the advanced rules?

I just do not see how the CSA can lose while using the basic rules.

If I were to hang my head, I'd miss all the rainbows. And I'd drown in raindrops instead.

I don't yet see how the CSA can win using those basic rules.

But I've heard others say it can be done, and I believe it.

A game isn't necessarily unbalanced just because one side seems to win all the time. Maybe you just haven't yet learned the trick to winning with the other side.

Even the Basic rules imply that that CSA has an advantage.

Exactly. That's what I'm saying. There's always more to learn. When one side seems to have the advantage, it means I need to work on learning to win with the other side.

They do? I haven't read them in a while, but I seem to recall that they suggest letting a newer, less experienced player take the Union side. I may be remembering wrong. But if they do say that, it implies the USA has an advantage (or that the CSA is the trickier side to play).
