Should they be resting entirely on the rods beneath them or can they be set at different angles? This could be important as the former would tend to result in a more stable ship (to begin with, at least!)...

Just give all of them a push and see, where they come to rest, I`d say.

Same with the cardanic joint. Wjhen you screw the bottom mast into the hull, make it tight, but don`t care for the direction of the two movement axis (axises ? - er ... well, the two directions of thecardanic something ).

Although they can be more stable (at the start) if lined up on the rods, it can also be harder to put items on the lower yardarms without knocking the higher ones. I like to give them a spin too, and see where they end up.
