UPDATE: Thanks to suggestions here in the thread, I've chosen a new name for the game. Skip to the end!

Hey, all:

I've been working on Project:Orbits for several months now, and I think it's finally gotten to the point where it's time to start finalizing all of the details. Art, theme, story, all of those things are now on the drawing board.

But the most important part is finding a better name for the game.

The name Orbits is a holdover from the original concept for this space-racing game, and the mechanic of needing to break orbit from planets along the course is still a major factor in playing the game. But I was never sure of it as a name, so I made it a 'codename' for the project, and it was redubbed Project:Orbits.

Over the months, I've come up with a number of names that hit on the space race theme, including this list:

Space Race
Galactic Rally
Rocket Race 5
Space Run
Cosmic Run
Asteroid Run
Galaxy 5000
The Galaxy Cup
The Orbital Cup
The Cosmic Cup
The Solar Sprint
Cosmic Dash

None of those really felt right for me, except possibly Galaxy 5000, but that was before I discovered Orbit: Rocket Race 5000. Even though the gameplay and goals are drastically different, this pretty much captures exactly the name I would have chosen for my game, if it weren't already taken.

SO, I'm looking for some fresh suggestions! The game is all-ages, a family game. The cards and art will have a light sense of humor, and I want the name to not take itself very seriously. I'd like something that conveys the theme (outer space, alien civilizations) and the goal (racing from planet to planet, like an interplanetary grand prix).

As a prize, I'll put up 20 GeekGold and a hand-made copy of the game when all the artwork is complete! Any GG donated through this thread will also be included in the pot.

Story of the Game:
I'm still working out some of the details, but the gist of it is this:
Thousands of years ago, this galaxy was in turmoil. Many civilizations discovered the power of Grotons as an energy source, and used it to master interplanetary travel. Unfortunately, they found their neighbors very difficult to relate to. The one thing they all seemed to have in common was their pride in their ability to travel through space, and they all liked to show off. Before long they began having periodical competitions to see who had the better spaceships, and this eventually grew into this regular race.

Players choose an alien race to represent in the race, and they determine the shape of the course. Planets along the course can be chosen at random, and each racer is assigned a Home world and a Rival world, which provide benefits and disadvantages during the race. Who will demonstrate their superior technology and racing skills by crossing the finish line first?

These are some great names, you guys! Thanks for all the excellent suggestions. Here's my thinking so far:

I actually still think it's pretty good, too.

I really like the sound of this one!

I'd considered going this route, but worried that putting a date on it would, well, date the game.

We're definitely thinking along the same lines, here! But I'm shying away from Wormholes, as that's the theme of one of the planned expansions.

I think Starrunners stood out for me here, more than the others. Race for the Stars is too similar to Race for the Galaxy for my taste. I also like Lightyear...

I think what I want you all to keep in mind with your suggestions, is that I feel like my original list was too generic. These names could apply to many different games, which I think was why I ran into the similarity problem with Orbit: Rocket Race 5000. I want the name to be unique, unmistakably tied to this specific game. I'm still thinking on my end, too, but all of these suggestions have been inspirational!

Keep them coming, guys! This is getting my juices bubbling, too!

You seem to be going for a cool retro Scifi theme here. I particularly like the look of the 'racetrack' set up.

How about one of these?

- The Groton Prix

- The Great Intergalactic Race

- The Interplanetary Invitational

- The Interplanetary Invitational: At Groton's Limit
(This could be for an expansion's name)

- The Groton Cup

Re: Name needed for Project:Orbits: Win GG!
Hey, all:

Thanks so much for your ideas and suggestions! Taking inspiration from a couple of the names thrown out up above, I think I've come up with the name I'm going to use!

It started with Jason Wallace's suggestions:
Jason Wallace wrote:

Lightyear Runner
...
Lightyear Prix
Starrunners

I got to thinking I liked the use of Lightyear, but that Light Speed might be better, since lightyears aren't really used as a unit of measurement in the game. Parsecs are, but I digress.

I also really liked Samantha RD's suggestion of Rocket Runners, as well as my own initial preferred name of Galaxy 5000.

For awhile I was bouncing around the idea of having a long, B-movie type name, and landed on Rocket Runners of Galaxy 5000, but I worry that it doesn't have the quick bite of something shorter.

I went back to the Lightspeed idea, but still felt like it needed a number after it. I came to the number 17, which is the maximum number of Parsecs a racer can travel on a turn. I liked the sound of Lightspeed 17, but wanted something just slightly more alliterative. And then it hit me - StarSpeed! It's a nonsensical term, so players can't complain about improper usage, plus it sounds like an 80s sci-fi movie, which is always cool.

So, the final full name will be:
StarSpeed 17: Rocket Racers of Galaxy 5000

Shortened to just StarSpeed 17 for casual use.

Huge thanks to Jason and Samantha for sending me down the right path, your GG will be on its way soon. And thanks again to everyone else for participating!
