Hi all,

Just curious everyone's thoughts on this site? I noticed it was listed as a Gencon partner and took a look out of curiosity. Not sure if it would fill a different need than this site but it certainly has an interesting leveling / XP / quest system and such.

Anyhow, just thought I would open up a discussion about it.

It's pretty. I've had an account since they opened up shop. The content is still in its infancy, and besides a possible differing point of view, I haven't seen a lot of reason to use it on a day to day basis.

But it is pretty.

I needed gold before I could upload an avatar here too.

What's the difference?

My take posted on F:AT recently:
I wrote:
Saw it when it first came out. Looks to be mostly (exclusively?) focused on reviews, which is far from the top of the list of things I get out of a bg site. Plus, wrt the whole quest approach, I'm not a big fan of incentives on review sites, plus it's a bit corny.

That said, since boardgaming.com first came out, BGG has been infected by the Kickstarter virus, so that makes the former's filtered approach more attractive to someone like me.

I don't think anything about it, because I don't go there. Too many game sites on my dance card already, and I don't want more.

(The "Kickstarter virus" comment is pretty funny, Dave!)

The difference being, it took me 22 minutes to drum up 30gg,
I have been on the site for over a year and still dont have enough XP to get a base color avatar...

And here you can upload a CUSTOM avatar.. there they are all canned.

Also, here i was able to update my collection in one day when I joined...
TO this day, i can still only add 4 fing games to my collection.. daily.. WHAT??ok..

the site is not for me.

Gotcha.

No need to get all hot and heavy. Just trying to spark a constructive discussion. It didn't seem like it took that long to get gold on first impressions.

WOW, they'd actually expect me to get one EVERY day for a YEAR except for thanksgiving day and Christmas day to add my collection data?

If I extrapolate the numbers correctly, the have a database of ~800 games on boardgaming.com? Through my work in the submission queues, I approve 800 game entries in about 2 months. There are already 2100 games and expansions in the BoardGameGeek database listed for just this year, i.e. first date of publication is 2012. Doing a quick search, the first SdJ winner I can find in their database is 1984's Heimlich & Co., and then none listed until 1995's Settlers of Catan.

Submitting content. Images get you 1 , while game reviews and session reports are anywhere from 3 to 5 bag.

Also, if you design a Microbadge, you get 0.25 for each one that sells.

I think the best way to get is to support the site, even if it's not as cost-effective as auctioning off money.

Just back from there after seeing this thread. It's pretty slick. Although I can't divide my affections for BGG with it.

It's nice looking, and the "game" is kind of amusing. I participated over there for a little while, but then got bored.

It just doesn't have even a fraction of the depth that BGG does, either in the game database or the game commentary or the user interactions. I don't think this is just a function of age, either - it's not even on track to ever come close, and I don't think it wants to. It wants to be light accessible. It's never going to have depth.

It also allows much less user control, which I think is related to the previous point. It's a different sort of site, and ultimately I think a much less interesting one.

I actually like it, it is different in many respects from BGG and I go in every once in a while. It is still in Beta, but it looks so much better than BGG and is more intuitive and inviting. I like some of the limits on certain things because it might reduce abuse and wasted time. I got tired of the questing like others have mentioned but I do not think it is very easy to earn GG on BGG so I would say they are on equal playing fields in that regards.

For something still in beta I think it will do fine and attract plenty of users, nothing wrong with some good competition. I know there are many aspects of BGG that users would like to see improved, more competition might just give a touch more incentive. It will be very hard to overthrow BGG as "The Board Game Site" but boardgaming.com will not be a POS either...
