Played my second game of Eclipse yesterday.
First play 4 players
Second play 5 players

Something really bothers me. the ship of the ancients, while
quite fearful during the first turns, they become a joke at later
turns, including the galactic centre.

I hate the fact that the non player enemies never keep pace with the development of the players.

I wonder what you guys think to add this little variant.

From turn 1-4 they have their regular build
From turn 4-7 they have Plasma Cannon instead of Ion Cannon and double Hull
From turn 8-9 they have Antimatter Cannon and triple Hull (they had this technology as the players are able to 'find it'. I think it's called Sharded Hull or something. and +2 Initiative.

In my opinion this would have been also possible to be printed on the big chits of the ancient ships.

I am aware though that this might break on the thematic side a little.

Good idea? bad idea? what you guys think?

If ancients are still alive by turn 4, then nobody wants to bother with them anyway. And this would help the Descendants race quite a bit.

But the rewards don't keep pace either. If an ancient is still alive by round 4, it isn't because it needs to become harder to beat.

The only situation where ancients stay around without it being a question of someone being down on their luck (in which case it would be cruel to buff the ancients blocking them) or the hex just not being attractive (in which case it doesn't need to be less attractive), is when the Descendants are in play.

How about the ancient ships can move. whistle
At the start of each round, the first player roll a die to determine the direction for the ancient ships to move (navigated from the first players position. Embrace the chaos!
If an ancient ship move to a player hex (with inf disc that don't have a ship / undefended) the ancient will control the hex in the upkeep phase.

Moving Ancients?? Sure gives one incentive to kill them as quickly as possible.

All we need now is a mechanic for random appearance on the board. More get added as the game goes along and why not make them more powerful as they get added.
