If you play the game with new players there main problem is to remember which pieces use which dice. To make it easier for new players and to slightly improve the look of the game I painted the bases of the minis in the colours of the dice they use. Here are some pictures of the colour-coded minis.

Green bases=d6:

Blue bases=d8:

Red bases=d10:

Black bases=d12:

No bases=d20:

I saw some of the pics already Neat idea, though the base shapes already show what dice to use

They definitely do look great!

Do they? I don't think so. The same shape indicate that the minis use the same die but which one ist not clear. Why does the regular hexagon mean d8?

Hmm, very nice idea for one of my favorite games.

Anything to further reduce downtime (by making turns go faster) is worth it IMHO.

I might have to try this -- do you find that enough of the original colour remains, so that it's clear which army each piece belongs to?

I have to admit that the colours fooled my for a few turns. After I moved one of my figures with a green base I wanted to move an opponents figure that had a gree base... I think the problem is that it is more common to show different factions by the colours of the bases...

But to answer you question straight: Yes, enough of the original colour remains. Even for the smallest peices (footsoldiers, wizards) more than 50% of the original colour remain.

Have a look at the dice sides.

Square for a cube (d6)
Each side of a d8 is a triangle
Each side of a d12 is a pentagon

The d10's sides are less regular, but the similarity is there, too.

But of course, your colors make things even clearer.

(Edit, doh, the d8's associated shape is indeed odd. Strange, I thought it'd make more sense - certainly did for me during play, strangely enough.)
