Each alien has a single government. Only the Terrans are divided and can have up to six different factions.

I wonder if it would be possible to have different factions with the alien species? What if part of the Orion empire rebelled and declared itself independent? Or if the Mechanema would divide into a North and a South kingdom?

In short, would it be possible for more than one player to play the same alien? Let's assume that home tiles and player mats are not a problem.

I can imagine that if there's more than one Planta faction, the universe is explored rapidly, or that if there are different Hydran factions, technologies would become scarce for non-Hydrans. But otherwise, what problems would arise?

As far as I know, the expansion will fix that. To a degree.

Also, I'd play it!

Not as far as I know either...and I've played it.

I think most races would be okay. Outside of the ones you pointed out, I wouldn't necessarily want two Descendants running around...

Lots of aliens would be weakened by having a second race sharing their ability.

Orion slugging it out with Orion not very productive.

Hydran x2 eats up too much tech.

Planta x2 eats up too many tiles.

Draco x2 will pull too many ancients and how would you split the VP bonus.

Eridani maybe.

Mechana probably OK.

Would not want multiples of aliens. Even if some would be OK, most would be broken in some way.

As I wrote: to a degree. Think Magellan.

Right. The Magellans will be on the back of the cards for the 3 new alien factions (they're supposed to be a lost colony of humans anyway, so that makes sense; i.e. three Magellan factions exist within the lost human colony).

it's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky / it's no secret that our world is in darkness tonight / they say the sun is sometimes eclipsed by a moon / you know i don't see you when she walks in the room
