So, I try to get people to try and buy new games, but I notice a huge hurdle is "they are so much more expensive" so they just buy another Monopoly or something similar.

So, I want to combat this "great evil".

I would like everyone to nominate what they think the greatest games that cost less than monopoly, so that we could vote on what the top 50 of these games were. This will have to be slightly divided into two price figures.

Price of CHEAPEST monopoly: 9.88

AVERAGE Monopoly Price: 18.45

So, what games would you nominate under 9.88 and what games would you nominate under 18.45?

The only game I know of at that price range is Zombie in my Pocket, at $13. (And maybe Monopoly Deal Card Game...)

You have to expand the limit at least up to $25 to get some truly great contenders in there. Unless you don't mind being limited to Chess and other abstracts.

That's the problem: some people will not spend that much! But, if you think 25 would be a good level, give me some games there, and I'll ask everyone else too: is 25 a better limit?

That's a pretty low price point. But off the top of my head, I enjoy Zombie Dice which has an MSRP of about $12-13. I also think The Resistance is phenomenal and it's listed at $19.95. Not too far out of the range, there.

Tough criteria to meet.

That's what I thought, which is why I figure for people who are really trying to get people to try a different board game, and that price is a factor, you can say: "This is less than monopoly!"

If they want quality they'll have to spend some money. Don't videogames and computer games tend to go for $50 to $60 new? Even new DVDs tend to go for $15 to $20, and DVD sets for highly desired TV shows can go for much more than that.

2nd-hand Monopoly?

Actually, that's not an entirely non-serious suggestion - if you want games cheap then look at the 2nd-hand market.

True, but not everyone who you are trying to get to spend money on something they don't usually want to spend money on is a bit more difficult.

Do you have a Five Below store near you?
We just got them in Atlanta; my wife discovered that they had a pile of Blockers (formerly Uptown) for five bucks.

Beat that...

Point 'em to things like Tanga.

Good games show up there, at reasonable prices.

Tough criteria if we are talking retail. I've found some great deals here at BGG auctions though. Thank you all you great BGG people!

I mean if you really want decent games at a good price they are there.

I've picked up:

Nexus Ops New in shrink for under $20.
Lost Cities for $6 bucks.
The Swarm for $2.24 on e-bay.

Retail though?

I've not played and I'm not sure how you feel about: Martian Dice retails for $14.95 at TMG. I'm looking to pick it up.

I'll see if I can think of more.

Topple, but you have to make it heavier by gluing some washers to the pieces. One of the Geeks here offers instructions. Under $10 for the game and a few bucks for the washers.

Great list! At $20, I'd add Quirkle, Incan Gold and Carcassonne. At $15, I second Bohnanza, Tichu and Citadels as personal favorites. Much better than Monopoly!

That is kind of like comparing an old black and white TV to a 50" Plasma. Games have come a long way since Monopoly, but more to the point Monopoly is able to be sold cheap because it has been around for ever...

I think rather than trying to find games that can compete with Monopoly on a $$ level you are better served to expose people to better gaming experiences. With just about anything if people don't know the difference they will be reserved when it comes to spending more money on an unknown. My experience is that if you are able to show people how much better games are today people get hooked and all of a sudden paying $40 for a game isn't the end of the world.

I think the risk you run in trying to find games for under $25 is that you won't be able to find many "board" games that give people the feeling that they are getting "value".

We recently converted a few friends to the hobby. They had a very similar opinion at the start with regards to how expensive the games are but after have a few really positive game nights next thing you know they are buying $50 games.

Even though it is out of the price range you can't go wrong with Ticket to Ride. I have yet to meet someone from the "monopoly" era that hasn't fallen head over heals in love with TTR.
