This game is quite abstract by nature and I had an idea to help new players understand the placement of Influence on the board. Maybe I should post that in the variant section, but here it goes anyways:

Why not place influence markers at the moment you play your piece on the board? Then when a quicker piece or when an obstacle is put into play you adjust/add/remove influence directly. In this way, new players can see how influence is handled without the hassle of abstractness and having to remember who controls each spaces. This is definitely the way I'm going to teach it in the future.

This is exactly how the iOS version of the game works. It's definitely helpful for new players.
