I planned to order from Miniature Market (I'm local to their HQ) but delayed getting in my order in and now I see they're showing 0 available for preorder.

Are people anticipating this selling out its first print run pretty quickly? I'm mulling over whether I should pre-order from Coolstuffinc or wait and see if Miniature Market gets more in. Coolstuff doesn't show the number they're expecting to receive so I'm not even sure if I ordered from them now that it would be fulfilled upon release.

Anyone have any best guesses?

this sold out in about 10 minutes at GenCon. Wether that was because of the popularity or the limited quantities they had I'm not sure. Part of the reason for selling out was many people purchased multiple copies of the core set, some even as many as 10.

Ten is crazy. They will never get away with that illegal ten copy deck.

I know that at the time that I pre-ordered through Miniature Market they had 27 listed as being available, so I know they must have sold a bunch, I think if you can find a preorder anywhere and if you want the game, I'd take it wherever I could.

They got a second shipment on day three, according to their video coverage - and those all sold out until day four, too. Seems to be quite a hit indeed.

Also, it's #1 on BGG's hotness list, for what it's worth.

Bit the bullet and just pre-ordered through Coolstuff. Bundled it with a bunch of stuff for X-Wing to get free shipping. Now, just hoping they'll have enough copies and that both those games come out relatively close to each other next month.

I ordered mine from Boards and Bits, the owner says they ordered enough copies to fulfill all pre orders.

I don't think anyone intends to do that. They bought copies for friends / to resell.

Someone mentioned FFG had 720 copies the first day and sold up to six copies to individuals. They managed to get an emergency re-stock which was 400 copies of which they sold up to two copies to an individual.
(I don't know if these numbers are accurate, though.)

They also kept back some copies for the icebreaker tournament players (depending on the source, there were 50-58 players).

I'm pretty sure the first printing of this will fly off the shelves. That's great for me, of course, since the localized versions will get printed in the second run, meaning I won't have to wait for long

Maybe, but in the original version there were no limits on the number of copies you could include in a deck. I don't think it's likely either, however. Just thought I'd mention it as I've seen decks with what seemed like 15-20 of the same card in it.

Almost:
400 first day, no limit, most people bought 2, a few bought up to 8 to take back to their clubs at home.

320 hijacked from the truck destined for their warehouse, loaded into the van to capacity and driven to GenCon for Saturday morning, where there was a strict 2/person limit.

I had also been eyeing it at Miniature Market and until a few days ago they were showing plenty available. Then suddenly after Gencon started it went down to 2. I immediately put an order in for it. I'm not sure if their inventory system was updating properly either, since it seemed to stay at 2 after I ordered and throughout the weekend. Nevertheless, my order is in, we'll see if I actually get it.

I managed to be 15th in line and got a copy, but their checkout system went down almost immediately. The line to check out was pretty epic, wish I'd have taken a photo. I got very lucky, ended up with my new copy in about 45 minutes due to the computer issues, I'm betting people were in that line for hours.

On the plus side, with the chaos involved it was a real comment on the honesty of the gaming community. I would imagine a few copies walked away, but on the whole most people were wandering unescorted to the end of the purchase line 4 or 5 aisles away from fantasy flight.

FFG is a big company so I don't think that they have to produce "too small" first run print, like smaller companies have to do, if they don't want to get burned if something goes wrong. So don't worry!
Allso Netrunner has very devoted fan base, but the Netrunner is not well known brand among "normal" people. So the chance of first print running out is not so likely as with LOTR or Star Wars lcg.
(This is counting that FFG made as large first printing as they did and will take from those "big" names. If it is smaller, then it is harder to say.)

FFG artificially limits copies at GenCon making the game seem more popular than it actually is. Don't worry too much.

I suspect if they could have gotten even more copies to the con to sell for full retail price directly they would have.

I don't think the expense of air freight is really an artificial limitation. There's a strong incentive to sell out of what you bring, not to inflate the perceived popularity, but rather so that you don't have to eat the costs of importing product early that doesn't sell until the main shipment arrives. Given the similar quantities of the initial supplies of both Netrunner and X-Wing, they were probably expecting the former to sell out several days into the con when the latter did. Bringing enough product to meet with what demand ended up being would have been a huge risk.

How do suggest they artificially limit copies? Are you saying they gauge public interest and then purposefully decide to only bring enough product to cover 30% of the demand? 50% of the demand? 15%? Considering that MSRP is what they are sold at and the project profit FFG makes when selling wholesale to a distributor, and the marketing power of having your game be the one seen being played everywhere in GenCon, it is in their best interest to provide a copy to as many of the people who want to buy the game at GenCon as they can. Especially for a card game which unlike a boardgame pretty much requires each player to own a core set.

Sure some level of scarcity is going to create a bit of hype, but you can establish that by simply being conservative in your estimation of potential buyers. If they believe they could sell a 1000 copies of a game but they should be able to absolutely be able to sell 800, then 800 is what they should bring. The only thing that should impact this figure is if they believe another product will sell in large enough numbers with a greater profit margin that the space of other games could be better used providing more copies of that game.
