Played two games of this earlier this evening whilst waiting for other players to arrive and the pre-match crowd to finish their ales and go to the game.
First impressions: lovely artwork, but aren't these just a bunch of pretty beer-coasters?!?!?!
After a brief rules explanation we dived into the Michiavellian world of Skull and Roses: a seemingly simple bidding and bluff game but an extremely entertaining one.
Each time someone won a 'trick'it was a truly epic experience, as this really is a game where you can mess people up- and it was hilarious to see just how evil people were!
So each time a trick was actually won, you really had the feeling that person had "stolen" the trick from under the noses of the other players- a most satisfying experience indeed when you consider that we are only talking about a game involving beer coasters and bidding.
Conversely, each of the players were devising their own devious strategies to catch out their fellow players and to be a deceptive as possible, including a great deal of bluffing: which when it backfired was even FUNNIER!
It seems that a very successful strategy is to simply screw up your fellow players by using the Skull as much as possible and not bidding. This way you can try to be the Last man standing and win by default.
Interestingly enough in our session though, no one actually followed this strategy for long, as everyone chanted to bid and win some tricks.
In the end: great game and one that really teaches you about how evil your fellow players can be!
I could not agree more! This game is awesome and everyone who has played it has wanted to play again immediately.
My 10 year old daughter begs to play this all the time. She had us rolling with laughter when she said, "wha, wha, wha", in a sad and mocking voice when one player flipped over her skull to lose his bid. Too funny! Great game
