Can you add the 5th player using the base game rules without the faction boards?

I'm not saying I dislike the faction boards just wanted to know if it would work

We have, since the Faction rules say that they suggest NOT using the Faction boards for the first game with the expansion.

You just have to use the 5 player Colonists Hub rules.

Oh yea is the game cut throat at 5players, and due to the limited Resources in a 5 player game raiders outpost usually will make or break marries or friendships.!!arrrh

Another problem with 5 players is late game the turns can take forever. When everyone has a big stack of tech and have to plan how they will manipulate their dice, turns can be quite time consuming. We prefer to play 3 or 4.

We play with 5 players quite a bit, with or without Factions.

I highly recommend that each player starts with only FIVE colonies rather than 6. That reduction of one colony makes a difference in game time, and it still makes the game interesting because:

Where you invest your colonies becomes more important.
Moving/Swapping colonies and Force Field placement happens much more.
The +1VP for holding the Alien City/Monument becomes much stronger

5 players without factions but with the full six colonies to place took *way* too long when we tried it.

I like the idea of changing it to 5 colonies. We'll try that next time if we get 5.

For 5 players and no faction boards, what do you think about reducing down to 5 ships max?

I've already been on record saying that 5 players is too much for unexpanded Alien Frontiers, but if you MUST do it, then limiting each player to 5 ships is probably a good suggestion to try out.

In the "Australis Sector", this is a general group-think rule. Anyone foolish enough to buy a 6th ship gets the crap kicked out of them! devil
