I am not sure if we played something wrong but in the end, we had a queue of for or five cards that neither of us could use to make cooking sets. We both figured we would just ent it rather than going through the motions of just taking cards. Seemed anti-climactic. Did we do something wrong or can it end that way?

It can end that way so it doesn't sound like you were playing it incorrectly. In most of our games, one or both of us are waiting to cook until close to the end. When exactly the game ends makes for some tension about how many turns you'll have to get your melds down.

Edit: I should clarify, that we're not waiting to cook everything until the end but it's not rare for us to have one or two cooks left when the last card gets flipped up in the forest.

It can really get tense if you're waiting on one last card to show up in time for you to finish cooking before your "walk through the forest ends" (the cards run out).

It's a matter of timing. Sometimes you can get in all your cooks just as the end is nearing and sometimes it has that "we're all out" end. It was weird at first but we got used to it.
