Functionally, the rules play exactly the same if you allow only matching genders to marry, instead of only opposite genders, as long as you're consistent throughout the game. Thought it might be a fun way to play. Although male households might be overly burdened by the inordinate number of hatstands required per family...

It sounded identical to me as well, but a friend pointed out it is actually functionally different (if minor):

Let's say Person A birthed 5 females. Person B and Person C can then birth a pile of males and marry into each others' families that Person A is completely excluded from. By the normal rules, you cannot block a person out like this while still being able to marry each other.
