I'm going camping with the extended family this weekend and next weekend. I'm planning on Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Dominion, Tsuro, Zombie Dice, The Great Dalmuti, and Dweebies.

The are all game the family is familiar with and has fun playing.

What games to you love to take camping?

Hive is a must. Those thick tiles will survive any environment. (Plus you can bring along your own Mosquito!)

Honestly I won't take anything but dice/card games that I don't mind getting dirty. Having to fold up a board while a storm rolls in is stressful, esp if there are lots of other bits.

Unnamed Object
Raj
Coloretto
Ascension: Deckbuilding Game
Can't Stop

Are ones we usually pack.

Thematic choice for camping, easy to tote, quick and easy for anyone to play:
Bears!
Con: max 4 players unless you buy more sets

Easy to repack into smaller container if you don't want to bring the metal tin, quick, co-op that anyone can learn:
Forbidden Island
Con: max 4 players

Both are great family games, though.

Definitely Werewolf, but that's because I'm always camping with non-geeks.

For The Win is a bakelite Hive-like game, that may be worth considering as well.

See this text? It's a gratuitous waste of GeekGold.

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

Our games for camping usually include two sleeved card games (Innovation and Ascension), two Bakelite tile games (Hive and For the Win), and a regular deck of playing cards.

Haha...Thanks, Christophe. All good points.

Playing games like Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride are a nightmare outside. And yes, we do usually have camping trailers when we camp so I like to take a mix of games that we can play inside if the weather isn't great and some we can play outside if weather permits.

Absolutely. Both are favs on my iPad. It's just hard to get it charged up again after the battery dies. I really need to get a solar charger...

It depends a bit on what you mean by "camping". Carcassone can sprawl out in weird directions and while the tiles have a bit of weight to them a stiff breeze could ruin the whole thing. The same goes with any of the card based games like Ascension.

Games that don't require boards are great, Zombie Dice and Werewolf came to mind for me as well. Another one to consider is Nanuk, there is one central pile of cards and a very small board, easy to contain and it can handle a variable amount of people very easily (very non-gamer friendly).

Blokus. Especially if you carry the pieces in a plastic container. Then you can play the game outside and not worry about the weather.

The Waldschattenspiel is great for starting a fire. You can play this as campfire game or when out in the woods.

Camping this weekend was fun with all the games we brought. Tsuro actually worked really well, even with some pretty intense gusts of wind.

Dominion was a little hard to play on a picnic bench because it was just a bit to small to comfortably play. Same goes for Ticket to Ride.

Zombie Dice was perfect and everyone loved it!

Going camping again this weekend and I want to pick up something new before that. Now I just have to decide what to get...

Our game Rise! performs quite well in a camping situation as it has a modular board and can be played in a small space.
