Haven't got this to the table yet but read the rule book several times and I feel I have a pretty good grasp of things. I had a couple questions though.

1. During the Action Phase can you take any number of Tactical and/or transfer actions as long as you don't pass? So I could take a Tactical action then when it comes around to me again take another one?

2. I'm at work so I can't remember the name of the race but they look like Gollum from Lord of the Rings on their card. Anyway they have an ability that allows them to skip an action phase if they want to. I couldn't think of a reason you'd want to though (keeping in mind I haven't actually played yet).

3. Any particular gems in the files section? 28 pages was too many for my to go through and check each one out. I have tech tree's and rules summeries but are there any other particular "must haves" in there.

Thanks. Looking forward to getting this to the table.

Yes, with the note that each Tactical or Transfer Action costs you one Command Counter from your Command pool (which you place on the board), so you are still limited by the number of CC's you have.

The Yssaril Tribes. It's a VERY useful ability. Going "last" in a round is a very important thing, because the longer you outwait your opponents, the less opportunity they will have to stop you before the end of the round.

With this ability, unless there is a pressing need to do something FIRST (which sometimes happens), usually the Yssaril will do an action, then skip, then another action, then skip, and eventually all other players will have passed, and they can do their last action or two without anyone being able to stop them. Near the end of the game, when grabbing a key planet or artifact, this can be huge.

I'll have to defer to someone else on that one, as I haven't gone through it in awhile. The "rules summary" files tend to be helpful though

Good luck with your first game, whenever that may be!

You're limited to take only one on during your turn (there's a tech that lets you to take two Tactical actions).

Yssaril Tribes. Skipping half of the turns is extremely powerful. It helps you not only during a military conflict (waiting till the opponent moves hes fleets, then strike where it would hurt most, without any retaliation), but also when opponents can benefit from your Strategy Card action. Say you take the Trade SC. Everyone waits for some trade goods to build their empires, but you wait, and play it when others already passed, they get the goods, but won't use it this turn.

Make sure you have the right tech tree. There are some changes and new techs in expansions.
And not the file, but an online tutorial http://www.preeminent.org/steve/games/ti3/ti3demo/3-player/h... that will help you to feel the game.

Play a couple of games with basic rules, maybe + distant suns. Later fix the Imperial SC (with FAQ or replace with Imperial II).

Conquer the Galaxy!

Edit: Oh, I spent too much time writhing this, Scott already answered

I miss interpreted the Yssaril Tribes ability. I thought it meant skip the whole thing entirely. So what it really means is they can pass and then take actions later in the same action phase?

Thanks for the links. As I just had my first child 6 weeks ago it will be a bit before this comes out but my wife and some of my friends are already chomping at the bit to play this.

They can "take an action" (on their turn) then "skip" (on their next turn) then "take an action" (on the turn following the "skip") then "skip"...and so on...but they cannot "skip" two turns in a row. Activating one's Strategy Card counts as taking an action during one's turn, and in fact one must activate one's Strategy Card before passing; so it could go "skip" then "play a command counter" then "skip" then "activate" one's Strategy Card then "skip" then "play a command counter" and so on.

Very powerful ability, arguably the single most powerful racial ability in the game.

I made a rules document a while back that I think does the job pretty well, though it's not real pretty! Needs a minor update (forgot to mention that trade goods can be spent as influence), but puts what you need to know about basic play mechanics right in front. One of these days I'll have to gussy it up a bit.

This is my favorite tech tree reference for the game.

Good luck playing around an infant! It can be tricky, but if you schedule around naptime, take turns with your wife in watching the baby and have a group that's cool with unexpected delays, you should be all right.

Okay I'm home from work and reread the Yssaril Tribes sheet and I realized I had just misread it. Thanks again for your help guys and I'm still open to more tips from anyone else who would like to chime in.

There any major "don't forgets" that get missed on early play throughs typically?

I don't understand the usefulness of a graphical tech tree as an in-game player aid, so I've found this checklist of be of immeasurable value.

I laughed when I read that! When I first started playing I would forget to use my race's racial abilities, like the Xxcha's to cancel an agenda I didn't like, and that was used against me! surprise
Don't forget to read the secondaries of Strategy Cards aloud to all players when executing your SC, so they can decide if they want to do it or not.

A really, really common mistake that new players make, is they take their command counters from the game board during the status phase and put them back on their race sheet, instead of in their reserve... "Hey, how'd you get such a huge fleet supply all of a sudden?!?!"

Don't forget about your fleet supply. My first game I lost a few destroyers because I got over excited about combat. Too many ships=casualties before combat even starts. I also recommend

The strategy guide does not have all the strategies (obviously). But it is a great piece of work. The super cheat sheet is a must. I do recommend going through all 28 pages when you have time though and the other BGG pages for the other expansions as well. Cheers!

Is there an updated one with Shards techs? I use the other one because it has everything.

There's one here, but there are some typos, and I didn't like the way he ordered some of the newer techs, so I revised it to fit my own needs, which you can take a look at here if you like.

I added a Strategy Card reference to the back and laminated it, and it's worked great so far.

I strongly recommend getting a tech sheet that has the full description of what the tech does, and then using that to mark which techs the players have researched (laminated, in plastic covers, one-use prints or anything). The tech cards are very confusing, particularly for new players.

It not only has the shards tech but all besides the race specific techs of both expansions and much further information.

If you decide you like the game, and are the crafty sort, These Files are essential for the complete and organized TI3 experience.

Tuckboxes are easy to make and great for organizing the game, and their clear labeling allows friends to help clean up with significantly reduced risk of things being put in wrong places

Typse2Fsat's Galaxy Map border [seen here] is one of those amazing tools that once you use it, you wonder how you got by before.

I've created an Excel doc with a checklist and unit list; each race has its own tab with the same techlist with their starting techs checked, racial techs, and flagships. It's actually an updated/improved version of one that someone did years ago.

I should really get it uploaded :\
