Before you start reading this, I think it is better state some things: I am a Brazilian guy with a borrowed copy of B-17, and using the variants found here in BGG and brought to us by Felipe Santamaria. As these variants are exactly what catch my eye, I really needed to use them :D so I do not have a pro class English, have the rules in English and variants in Spanish, so sometimes you can expect some confusion :D In parenthesis you can find the numbers I got on the dice. With the variants, sometimes you need to roll a d100, so those ones are followed by % symbol. I have some questions mainly on who operates the Machine Guns… so if you found any errors, please let me know

IF ANYONE MORE EXPERIENCED WITH THE VARIANTS CAN CHECK IN ZONE 8, I CHOOSE THE ALTERNATIVE TARGET; I DO NOT ROLL FOR FLAK OR FOR FIGHTERS IN MAIN TARGET AS I BELIEVE THAT AFTER THEY SEE THE BAD WEATHER THEY DO NOT GO DOWN TO FLAK RANGE, BUT I AM NOT SURE, SO ANY ADVICE WILL BE APPRECIATED. AS WELL I NEED TO BE SURE THAT DURING FLAK, I ROLL 3 TIMES AND I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS CORRECT.

IN ZONE 4 DURING RETURN, I AM NOT SURE IF THE DAMAGE OF THE ASCENDING FIGHTER IS CORRECT (WHEN RESOLVING THE WALKING HITS)

I AM NOT SURE HOW TO HANDLE THE MEDALS AS WELL. THE FROSTBITED THOMPSON RECEIVES A PURPLE HEART OR NOT ??? I PUT AS HE DO NOT RECEIVED, SO MAYBE 10 POINTS MORE TO ME.

I am actually flying by dates, and I am starting my campaign in January/43. My first B-17F produced is Miss Patricia (he will get number 1,2 on 2d6 for next missions). I randomize the crew, and no one has received any training.

During the briefing, the pilot Arthur Shanafelt is instructed to fly over Vegesack and bomb a Sub Base; if not possible his alternative target will be Bremen to bomb an airplane factory. He goes out of briefing a little worried, as Vegesack is very far, and they are expecting high resistance; the ammunition is always a concern on missions like that, and of course the damage they can expect. The escort will only stay with them until half of the path, so the prospection is grim. Beside that, everyone knows that Vegesack is well defended (+1 Flak), and the Weather Forecast is Good, which can help the FLAK when they goes there. He will fly on Central position, in Middle Squadron (-1 to Fighters), in normal Fomation. There are not sky tracks to help the germans.

He goes to search his crew and James Dooley, his Co-Pilot, has ready the flight plan: Zone 2 on Water, -3, Zone 3 on Water -2, Zone 4 on Water -2, Zone 5 on Water -2, Zone 6 on Water -2, Zone 7 on Water -2, Zone 8 on Germany -1. At least the evasive maneuvers of the formations will hinder the efforts of germans. He discuss a little the flight plan with Dooley and readies to take off.

The take off is made according the manual and no effect is produced (8), so the B-17 is where he is expected to be. They will be escorted by Spitfires P-48 with good cover (mission 1) up to zone 4. The radio check was made, and everything is ready to be used.
They enter zone 2 and Henry Tompson sees the coast of England being smaller, making a little pray to come back. The B-17 is standing good, as no mechanical failure showed (9). No german approaches, the sky is clear. (2 -3 =-1)

They proceed to zone 3 and silence on the sky; no mechanical failure happens (8), even the people on radio are a little worried, as the germans do not show up to “welcome” them (3-2 =1)

They go for zone 4, the last one with escort, without any mechanical failure (7); they are halfway there and no fighter showed up (1 -2 = -1). The escort make the last contact, wishing “Godspeed and Good hunting”. David Matthews, the Radio Operator prefers the “Grab the gun and bring the cat” quote, but as they are not one of the leaders, he prefers to stay quiet. The B-17 squadron leader pass the radio “we have a date here on our way back boys. Do not be late”, and everyone on the plane smiles. Up to now the mission is very good to be a bombardment.

They enter zone 5 with clear sky, and Miss Patricia is holding well (3) – Finally the sneaky germans showed up as the Head Squadron emits the alert (6-2 = 4 ). 1 group approaches, but the enemies are deflected by other B-17 (with a 14%,). Unluckly, the B-17 was hit by friendly fire on right wind (6, followed by a 4 – 1 impact, 8 right wing). Luckly, it was only a scratch (7, superficial damages).

We enter zone 6 still brave, no mechanical failure (10), and we can see germans on horizon again (5 -2 =3). 1 group comes (68%, followed by 6%), 4 FW 190 on front of plane (12 High and Level, 1:30 High, 10:30 High), the first with a Green Pilot and the third with an Ace (3, 5, 11, 8). Robert King, the Bombardier assumes the right cheek; Judd Deleon, the right Waist Gunner tries to hit the Ace togheter, but both misses (3-1=2, 4-2=3); Anthony Fidates, the Engineer tries to hit the Green pilot, no success as well (4+1=5); Paul Connors, the Navigator assumes the Nose MG, trying to hit the 12 Level fighter, but no success (5), Cameron Self, the Left Waist tries to hit the 10:30, misses as well (5). The germans tries to hit Miss Patricia: 12 High misses (2-1=1), 12 Level misses (2), 1:30 High misses (4) and 10:30 High hits (5), producing 3 impacts (8, 3): Right Wing (8, a 4 after) damaging the Wing base, Superficial Damage (4) and superficial Damage (4); Henry Thompson tries to hit the Green pilot, but misses (3+1=4); the fighters comes for the second assault in position 12 Level (9). The engineer and the navigator tries to hit it, but misses (1, 3), the german misses (4) and the tail gunner misses as well (3)

We enter zone 7 without mechanical failure and only with minor scratches, but everyone knows this will not endure (10), as another group of germans coming (4-1=3, 61% followed by 00%), so 1 FW 190 6 High, with Veteran Pilot (8); Matthews on Radio Room make spread fire and the top gun plus tail gunners goes for him. First the tail gunner hits (4), badling damaging the fighter (4: -2 and break – 0,6 to tail gunner); Fidares in top turret hits as well (5), almost not catching him (1), and the fighter continues on the way (-0,45 to engineer). The spray attack does not go well (1), and the MG is jammed. The fighter attacks and misses (3-2 =1), problably shaken by the hits.

We enter zone 8, approaching the target; the forecast is good, (roll is -1 to weather), but they never was so wrong (6-1 =5), it has heavy fog, and only 10% of visibility. The commander order us to go Bremen, to see if the time is better and there we go without descend on target. In Bremen the time is much better and we can see the factory much better as only thin fog is in the air. (2-1=1). There is no mechanical failure on Miss Patricia (7). The Radio Operator finish his job when trying to fix the MG (6), so it is broken permanently and he can only operate the radio and bring ammunition to others. A quick damn is heard on the crew radio, but nothing more than that. Only 1 group of fighter come to us, they believe because everyone was on Vegesack, and the others being very occupied with the head formation (3-1=2 – 1 group, 48%, followed by 80%). 4 109, at 9 Level, 9 High, 6Level, 1:30 High, all with veterans (6, 9, 8, 5). Thompson hits with tail gun (4), hitting the fighter hard (3+1=4: -2 and break – 0,5 to tail gunner). Connors moved to Right Cheek and hits (6) hitting him hard as well (3: -2 and break - 0,5 to navigator), and Right Waist does not hit (5). Jessy Delaney on the ball turret hits as well (6), and another fighter is badly damaged (2+1 =3: -2 and break – 0,5 to Ball Gunner). The Top Turret misses (2), but Cameron Self in left waist hits on bull-eyes (5, followed by 6), destroying the fighter and getting the first kill to Miss Patricia (and gaining 1 point, 1 kill). Very nice shooting from Miss Patricia mans, but now the fighters has the ball. First the one at 6, who misses (1-2 =-1), followed by the one at 9 who misses (4-2 =2) and finally the one at 1:30 who misses as well (1-2=-1). My men shooting put them all in fear !!! Very nice, we are approaching the target and we have no much damage, and plenty of ammunition.
Flak has -2 modifier (B-17 evasion), and the plane get Medium Flak (6-2=4). First roll, is a fail (11), second roll hits (7), third roll hits again (2). First one produces 1 impact (3), second 2 impacts (8) for a total 3 impacts. First affect Tail (7), second Left Wing (6), third Tail again (5). First and second impact damages the Rudder (7, 7), letting it very close to be completely useless, but not for now. The impact on left wing destroy the flap. Now the Bombardier concentrates and try to deliver the bombs on target, which is very, very difficult… (-2 from evasive maneuver, -1 for being touched by Flak), but he manages to achieve it (6-3=3) !!! Nice job from Robert King, with 50% of precision (11) !!! For some time the FLAK sound are substituted by screams of joy from the crew. “We grab the gun, and we are bringing the cat !” thinks Matthews, when Arthur makes the turn in formation and the trip back starts.
FLAK is still firing, but not even a single fire on our direction (1 -4 = -3), but the fighters is still on the move. 1 group of them comes (6-3=3 – 1 group), 2 190 fighters coming (54 followed by 02), one 1:30 High, other 9 Level with veteran pilots (8,8). The ball and top turret misses on 9 Level (2,2) as well the Left Waist (2), the navigator on Right Cheek and the Right Waist at 1:30 misses too (3,4). The germans attacks, 9 Level hits (5), for 3 impacts (6), 1:30 misses (4). The 3 impacts are left wing (6), superficial damage(8), Body (5). On left wing, superficial damage again (8), and for the body, superficial damage as well (7). The tail gunner fire at 1:30 fighter, hitting it with a 6, and getting it downed with another 6. Second kill for the crew, and the things looks better (1 kill and 1.5 points to Tail Gunner). The second run from fighter is again 9 Level (4), and will receive the same 3 attacks and only the Waist gunner hits (2, 4, 6). Unluckly he gets a 5, but with 1 modifier he only make a bad damage on it (5-1=4, -2 and break, 0,6 to wraist gunner). The fighter attacks and now misses (3-2=1).

We come back to zone 7, and the B-17 looks new, no mechanical failure (6). No fighters come to our plane (3-2 =1), and we get a good feeling about it as our formation deflects the attacks.

Entering zone 6, no mechanical failure (4), and no fighters again (4-2=2). Our formation is making a great job letting them outside.

Entering zone 5, no mechanical failures happens (6), again no fighters (2-2=0), so the bombing put the germans dizzy in our opinion.

Entering zone 4, our escort is back, and we are glad about it. No mechanical failure (10), and 1 group is coming (5-2=3). 3 fighter 109 (70, followed by 62) flied by 3 veterans (10,7,8). They are 3 High, 3 level and Ascending, only 1 being deflected by escort (2). The last one cannot be dealt with by our escort, so we choose 3 High. Top Turret and Right Waist misses the 3 hour (4,4). The ball gunner hits the ascending one (5) and let it badly damaged (3+1=4: -2 and break, 0.5 points to ball gunner). They attack, and the 2 hits (6 and 6, darn). The 3 level gets 3 impacts (9), the ascending one 5 (12). Bad news people… I resolve the impacts of 3 level: Tail (9), Right wing (3), Superficial Damage (7). On tail, left elevator destroyed (10,3); on right wing, superficial damage (7). For the ascending: Tail (5), Left Wing (6), Tail (5), Walking Hits: Fuselage (9) and Tail (5). So, every hit is Cancelled, and I get 1 hit in every compartment. For Top, Superficial damage (7), Pilot compartment, the Top Turret destroyed (8 followed by 2), Bomb Storage nothing happens (9), Radio Room the Control Cables are damaged (12) for no effect (now), Body the right gunner is hit, by light wound (1) in his head (1,2). And finally in the tail, the heating suit is damaged.
The last fighter need to abandon due his bad shape. The first one comes from 1:30 high. Both MG misses (5,5) and top turret is damaged, so no hits; the fighter misses (2).

Moving to zone 3, Arthur decides to stay in formation, even risking his friend Henry Thompson. This not happens this turn (5), and no mechanical failure (5). The cover is good, and no one approaches us (2-2=0).

They are seeing the shores of England in zone 2. Arthur are tempted to be out of formation, but cannot risk the plane. Henry need to hang on, but has no luck and frostbite is hitting him (2). We are close, friend, hang on. No mechanical failure (7), good cover. 1 last group reach us (6-3=3), but are deflected by other B-17 (6%). This time we do not have friendly fire (4), so we can return home safely.

Arthur start the landing procedure, and has his plane in good shape (no modifiers), but the time is horrible (6, -2 Landing), but the plane and crew are safe (5-2=3). He only hopes that the others B-17 can land on this kind of time. Henry receive medical attention, but he will not be able to fly anymore (get a 3), being returned home. Judd Deleon received medical attention as well, but problably he can fly next mission, and he receives the Purple Heart on the hospital.

For this mission I think I received 458 points, and 237 Damage points.

But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you… And I will beat you.

You would have rolled for flak and the fighters in the original target Zone. They are not directed by just sight, they have controllers on the ground directing them to their targets, YOU! Now there would be a modifier for the weather to those die rolls.

Yes you roll three times for the flak.

Also I would think you would still roll flak in the Secondary Target Zone too as ALL the Cities in the direction of your flight path would be on alert to attack. Many, Many, Many planes were lost to flak over cities that were not the attended target city.

Yes you were correct in one aspect the walking cancels out the other rolls, though once you roll the Walking hit you don't need to roll the rest. Just remove the previous rolls from your sheet and enter the locations dictated by the type of walking hit.

As per your rolls:
Tail (5), Left Wing (6), Tail (5), Walking Hits: Fuselage (9) and Tail (5)

You didn't need to roll the last tail hit. Then the Tail, Wing and Tail hits would be erased and the entry for the Wing (a) Fuselage hit would be entered.

ie: Nose / Pilot / Bombs / Radio / Waist / Tail. Then you can resolve the hits.

As a side note, if you are scoring missions with the number of hits taken (As I do) then I would change my hits entry for this attack from (5) to (6). Even if you take a (1) hit and then subsequently roll a Walk. This also work the same if a FW190 generates (10) hits [6 o'clock low with a hit roll of 12 {7 hits x 1.5 = 10.5 hits round down to 10} then you would change this to a (6) hits. So on a few occasions you will make out by getting a walking hit.

The US Army/Marines/Navy and Air force do NOT award the PH for frostbite. Medals are ONLY awarded for injuries received due to ENEMY action. Sub-Zero Temperatures are not necessarily our enemy as of yet.

Hope this answers your questions and helps you!!

Good luck with your campaign,

Thanks Jim, you have helped a lot. Miss Patricia receives a bie this time but your info is good for next mission. Looks like a tricky game, but I have a good time. I will try to por RAF II as well, but will stick with B-17 for some time.
