ON MY RADAR 05/06
Last Edit 7/7/06 Summer's here and along with it, some significant games coming out from the post Nuremburg list in English along with other additions from FFG and Rio Grande. I'm adding a few late purchases that will probably go through July and then it will be time to start the 06/07 RADAR and transfer the late English published editions to that list. The opinions posted within are mine and made up from personal conjecture and influenced somewhat by mass public opinion. At the very least, these are all games that I would probably be willing to sit down and play with someone. Some of the games here were released in English prior to Essen 05, and some have yet to come out but hold special interest and high hopes for a 2006 release. (I have already acquired those marked in bold print.) I've added my impulse buy list for this year also.

Post Nuremberg 06 Interesting Games
- Gloria Mundi (RGG) (played and I like this one)
- Augsburg 1520
- Bohnkick
- Ticket to Ride: Marklin (out now in English)
- Carcassonne: The Tower expansion
- Thurn und Taxis
- Blue Moon City (in English by Mayfair August?)
- Alhambra: The 4th Expansion
- Shogun
- Mykerinos
- Crazy Diamond & Karatino
- Fiji
- Maestro Leondardo (formerly Leonardo da Vinci)
- Kleopatra and the Society of Architects (I like BC games)
- Chinesische Maure (Kosmos/Knizia Great Wall)

New designer games of great interest for me (must buy):
- Fiese Freunde Fette Feten (2F) (just wrong on many levels)
- H2Olland (Cardchess) (tulips galore, wives and girlfriends will love it with great strategy to boot)
- Marvel Superheroes (Nexus/FFG late 06) (one can only hope it will be good)
- Beowolf: The Legend (FFG) (great card/hand management and theme)
- Tempus (Pro Ludo) (high hopes for this abound)
- Siena (ZuGames) (a mural of excellence)
- Caylus (Ystari/RGG) (the new contender)
- Freya’s Folly (Sagacity) (hi-ho, hi-ho, there’s gems to be had below)
- Byzantium (Warfrog) (another Wallace winner)
- HAVOC: The Hundred Year War (Sunriver) (poker hand management and more)

- Elasund: The first city (Mayfair) (a break from the usual Settlers style)
- Railroad Tycoon (Eagle) (big is better)
- Red Planete (March 06?) (this looks to be classy)
- Shear Panic (too cute, English distribution by Mayfair)
- Alexander the Great (Phalanx) (a solid 7+)

Designer games piquing my interest (may buy):
- Antike (Civ ultra-lite in under 3 hours)
- Dragon Riders (RGG) (put cut out hexes under the dragons!)
- Himalaya (last year’s DSP still holds interest & worth getting)
- Ostia: The Harbor of Rome (bidding & bluffing in 5 rounds)
- Timbuktu (Queen) (wooden camels, Mmmm)
- Mesopotamia (Phalanx) (looks good)
- The End of the Triumvirate (Lookout Games)
- Pompeji: The last 37 minutes (CardChess) (a possible sleeper)
- World of Warcraft (FFG) (Ultra mega fantasy boss bash, I like it)
- Pirates (Eagle now mid to late 06) (Winds of Plunder may be better)
- Soccer Chess (Goooooaal)
- Decent (I caved in and got this dungeon crawl with cool bits)
- Dynasties (changed my mind on this one and got it)
- Ca$h and Gun$
- Hacienda (a good solid 7 game that borrows from others)

Barometer Falling: Ones that don’t hold my interest as much (your mileage may vary):
- Kaivai (interesting but maybe too long (and too big) for what it is)
- Indonesia (Splotter) (ho-hum, monopoly on steroids)
- Big Kini (Playme) (just didn’t catch my fancy but said to be good)
- Aqua Romana (Metro on steroids but looks great)
- Carcassonne: New Land (yawn)
- Castle Merchants (lost out to Caylus for me)
- Railroad Dice 2 (RR1 was enough)
- Angkor (looked good and scales well)
- Ahoy/Aloha (Cwali simple fun but not my style)
- Vegas Showdown (AH is getting better at designer games)
- Parthenon (Z-man) (too many cards)
- Lucca Citta (Pro Ludo)
- Key Largo (interesting play, but I'm not big on the theme)
- T&E card game (RGG) (may be a good travel game)
- Band of Heroes (Matrix) (a nice follow on to Lock n Load)
- Soccer Ligretto
- Sharur: Evolutions (Asmodee) (on indefinite hold)
- The Age of Gods (Asmodee) (also on hold)
- Anachronism: set 4+ (History Channel)
- Celtica (possibly a very good family game)
- Here I Stand: Wars of the Reformation (GMT not interested in this CDG)
- Nottingham
- Rocketville (this bombed)
- Runebound: Midnight (the co-op aspect is garnering good reviews)
- Masons (Reminds me of Alexander, nice but not burning up anything)
- Um Ruhm und Ehre (something in the dice rolling turned me off to it)

On the Subject of Warfare:
- PG: The Road to Berlin (Avalanche Press now out)
- The 1st World War (Phalanx/RGG) (simple WWI play)
- Wellington (GMT) (interesting rendition of the Peninsular war)

- WotR: Battles of the 3rd Age (Nexus/FFG Mar 06) (Wow!)

- B2B and FtP updated cards (GMT)
- Shiloh (Columbia)
- Hellas: Peloponnesian Wars (Columbia Games in 06) (looks promising)
- Front 4-map combo (Columbia, shipped)

Please don’t take the list personally if you find your favorite game didn’t make it or is in the wrong category. I’ll probably update this list regularly as I did with last years so if something convincing comes along it will surely find its way here. My old Radar from last year is still available for comparison at http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/55236. Remember, it’s all about having fun. Cheers.

Care to share your thoughts on this? I want to like this game, but the reviews and rules so far have left me uninterested.

I thought it was a great game myself. A flat out blind-bidding game with lots of bluffing. If you don't generally like that kind of game, Alexander is not for you. It really shined with me. People take the simplicity of the game play for granted, but I think there is a lot going on. You are right though, it is most definitely divided love/hate game.

I think Micheal states it best. If you like blind bidding, you'll probably like this game. I read all the reviews as well before buying it and am not disappointed. There were plenty of people at Essen 05 both playing and enjoying the game. I personally like the idea of allocating my resources and then changing my strategy as the game develops because events that were unforeseen may have occurred (like other players outguessing your plans). I think some folks were expecting a war game and were disappointed to find that this falls squarely in the designer game category. I consider it a solid 7 game; One that won't rise to great heights but won't be relegated to obscurity either.

I didn't have to many issues with the rules, and the quality is on par with other Phalanx games and does not disappoint. The expansion and progression of the game fits nicely in line with the theme. It's certainly not my top choice for the coming year, but you could do far worse.

Cheers.

Having made the P500 cut, Winds of Plunder has a good shot of being out sometime in '06. This will mainly depend on pre-orders continuing to hold steady enough to keep the game from being leapfrogged.

Ryan, thanks for the tip. I'm hoping DoW will have some at BGG.con.

As for Winds of Plunder, I'm hoping it gets released by Essen 06. It has some very Euro appeal to it. I'm anxious to see how it compares to Pirates whenever that gets into print.

Obviously a marketing ploy. Why not have a game: Settlers of ASL?
