we played this game for 5 hours and almost finished it!
this is a great game and a brain cruncher: nobody seemed to be able to really devise a strong winning tactic.
one thing that worked was building a wood-generating tile, and then replacing all other woods with residentials, so that players have to give you victory points if they need wood.

the main goal of the game is building the castle, but nobody seemed to care about that. most points were scored by just building as many tiles as possible. Royal Favors didn't add all that much and were hardly used.

although the layout of the board gives a fantastic visual representation of the sequence of play, in the end things become quite cluttered, with blocks and money being generated and spent all over the board.

In the end everybody loved this game because of its dynamic gameplay and great board-layout that actually adds to the game.
We'll have to play it again to find out if you can really develop a winning strategy while playing, or if this game actually does become more chaotic with every turn.

If your opponents are NOT building to the castle and you as well decide not to, then you've missed the mark. There are a LOT of victory points to be grabbed early in building to the castle, and a LOT of favor as well, which really translates into some big advantages later... Couple that with NEGATIVE vp's for your opponents if they didn't build to the castle, and I don't understand how you 'skipped' this section at all...

In Caylus, when it comes to Castle building against city building, it is basically advantageous to work on the thing that the other players are ignoring.

If you alone are building the Castle, you can get favors easily. The more competitors at the Castle, the more difficult it is to get favors.

If you alone are building the city, you have a better choice of buildings, whatever you build will be placed earlier on the road, and everybody have few choices for their workers so your building will get more use. If the city is over-developed, it is hard to milk extra benefits (beyond the immediate PP reward) from yet another new building.

yep, indeed all the posters above right to point out "power" of the favours. if no one wants to build, then you have it sorted! The favours of "free cubes" coupled with "free builds" is tremendous especially when you get to late game and get that gold cube!. The "free build" is 2-fold advantage, you get to build for free (ie without using up a worker)and get that building for cube less

While I am sure possible to "win without castle building" it is only if NO ONE does any significant castle building. Any player with the resources of those 3 cubes and see no one building yet would be foolish not to..
