Gather 'round kids. Thomas Bowdler has come to make sure that your Puerto Rico won't offend.

Some whacko changed Tobacco and Coffee to Wheat and Cinnamon. I'm a bit surprised that Sugar made it to the final copy.

Who plays Puerto Rico with kids anyway?

http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=4&cam...

The copy makes this all worthwhile:
Quote:

Puerto Rico is a very Fun Game for ages 12 and older. If you want a game that is all things to all people. This is it.

Prospector, Captain, Mayor, Trader, Settler, Craftsman or Builder? Which roles will you play in the New World?

This game was played 1 or 2 times. There is one slight tear on the corner of the box. Other than that it looks brand new.

This game has been modified by healthy people. It was modified by a computer engineer so it appears just like the original pieces, I have enclosed a photo to see.

So instead of coffee and tobbaco, the commodities are wheat and cinnamon. Great alterations for playing with children!

Get healthy everyone!

Yes, a fabulous idea! Now your children can grow up thinking that wheat and cinammon were as integral to the economy of Puerto Rico as coffee and tobacco. Ignorance can never start too early!

Might as well get them used to the Orwellian concept of changing history early.

Now with Wheat, Cinnamon, Dye and Sugar it is obvious how Puerto Rico has become the Kid's Cereal powerhouse that they are now.

When I was a kid I was always a little frightened by their mascot, Brownie. There was just something about that little round guy, grinning and tap-dancing across the TV screen, so eager to please. Kinda freaks me out thinking about it, even now.

Someone got a copy of Puerto Rico for 19 dollars? I'd pay that for a retarded version of it.

And while we're at it, who thought they could improve on the title of the venerable Victorian parlour game of Snakes and Ladders by changing it to the bland Chutes and Ladders?

I had really wanted to get up and bid on this, but after my morning cup of cinnamon I was too groggy to remember my password.

Frightening!

If I was trying to teach my kid to be "healthy", I wouldn't pretend that caffeine & nicotine don't exist, especially with a 12 & over kid.
A game like PR seems like a good way to give a kid a bit of understanding of several things. Maybe they'll never make any more of a connection between the goods markers and coffee & tobacco, or the brown discs and slaves. Maybe they will and it'll inspire them to learn more.
Who knows?
I do know I've played PR with 7 & 8 year olds who didn't entirely understand the strategies, but had a good time playing. So far, none of them has taken up coffee drinking, smoking, or slave owning, as far as I know. They are, however, very motivated by Sugar.
