I know I'll be called a total nerd, but seriously FFG, Tie Fighters have black panels, not grey panels.

Yeah, I'm interested to see what this is in reference to, because the TIEs sitting on my computer desk are appropriately painted.

Nah, they're totally grey. Hold one up to something that is truly black and you'll see.

They are "scale black", which is actually a dark gray. This is appropriate, in my opinion, for the size of the miniatures.

However, if you don't like that, you can always paint them straight black yourself, right?

Some are born to move the world To live their fantasies But most of us just dream about The things we'd like to be Sadder still to watch it die Than never to have known it For you, the blind who once could see The bell tolls for thee...

GenCon demo - black panels:

Actual released copy - grey panels:

I feel so deceived, like my memories of GenCon 2012 were ripped out of my chest and replaced with a farce. I thought only Lucas could ruin Star Wars this badly, et tu FFG?

You've got it all wrong. They were originally grey, but when they were remastered they were turned black. Don't make me get my Betamax copy.

Based on one totally random picture on the internet, and ignoring all other evidence, I'm going to say, both are right: http://www.geekologie.com/2008/07/29/tie-1.jpg

hmmm...maybe they were running low on black ink when they realized how many sets they were selling so they diluted the paint.

These were introduced in Special Edition to remove the matte line transitions.

PS... All my Kenner ties, even the tie-interceptor had grayish panels. My original tie had black, but later editions had grayish.

I bet it's to make painting over mistakes easier. Grey over grey is probably one coat whereas grey over black is multiple coats.

On an unrelated note, my child got ahold of one of the Tie-Fighters and we've discovered they have an incredibly weak point where the wings attach to the cockpit.

I really hope people realize that was tongue-in-cheek.

Heh, welcome to the world of pre-painted miniatures. In FFG's defense, I don't yet have my copy in hand, but every prepainted demo and stock photo mini I've ever seen is always worlds better than the actual mass produced end product (with the notable exception of Rackham's AT43 Vehicles... my god those things were immaculately painted and detailed).

But anyways, even a really crappy WotC D&D prepaint looks perfectly decent on the tabletop from a few feet away. I suspect these minis look levels of magnitude better than those, so there shouldn't be any detraction from the aesthetics or feel of gameplay.

Because i do take the pictures and own the ties on the picture, and they are not BLACK BLACK if not a deep dark grey, maybe is kind of modelism detail as mentioned before. Still the ties look great! Also the wings

Thumbed the thread for the attention to detail. But those panels look black enough for me. Now if they'd just release some freaking B-Wings already!

B-Wing and TIE/B will make me a happy guy. I was thrilled to see TIE/I coming out so early into the product cycle.
