If I have a plane without a long distance marker on it, can I still place an airport tile two destinations away by rolling?

Figured it out from the rules. You can only do the two destinations away thing if you have a plane with a long distance marker on it.

This confuses me. Is Australia an exception to this then?

I assumed that ONLY the links with "long distance" indicators require a "long distance" aircraft. Otherwise players can choose to take RISK to go as far as they wish when they place Airport tiles.

Nope. Page 4:

Quote:
Occasionally, you may build in a destination two connections away by
using a long-distance aeroplane

Quote:
In addition to its use on long-distance routes
indicated on the map, a long-distance aeroplane
allows you to “skip over” a destination on a
connection to establish a new airport farther away
than usual.

I think it's fairly clear you can only use a long distance airplane to skip destinations.

On page 5 there is a clarification about the notched connections:

"The cross bars on the connections to these destinations
are used to denote how many rolls are required for these
dangerous routes. They do not equate to “skipped” cities."

So you can fly to australia without a long distance plane.

That's how a read it and played it, but both video reviews explained/played the game incorrectly.

A long distance plane lets you attempt a connection marked long distance, or skip a city and put an airport 2 cities away. 2 away is the maximum you can attempt to place an airport.
