I'm making a deckbuilding game, Professor Pugnacious' Portfolio of Perils, Pugilism, and Perfidy-the Card Game of Victorian Combat, or 6P for short. Long story short, you build a deck of cards that you then use to defeat enemies. My very talented artist has come up with these two card designs, and I'm having trouble deciding between them.

Here's an enemy card and a deck card using the first design:

And here are the same two cards with the second design:

What do you prefer?

I prefer the second group. Having the number in the corner rather than the middle makes it stand out more. I also think that rectangular shapes just look better on cards.

i would like the first set better if the number in the center at the top was a little larger. It seems like the card with the number in the corner the number is bigger. Thematically I like the look of the first ones better.

To be honest, I don't see much difference besides the fluff -- a chrome border vs. a paper border?

Bigger top numbers would be nice. The corner placement of the number would help when fanning the cards in your hand though. Hence I like the second one more.

Second groupthumbsup
They just feel more elegant to me; I think I found the fancy 'top' part a little distracting on the first group.

That's weird. This bit used to mention Shire Games, and tell you all how wonderful we are. But it seems to have got deleted. Let's see what happens this time ....

However, if you only put the number in the top-right corner, fanning them will only work for left-handed children of the devil.

Us normal right-handed people will only get the blank corners.

Oddly, I have always found numbers in the top-right to be preferable when fanning; I am right-handed, and somehow that's the way I naturally fan cards (pushing with the thumb anticlockwise rather than drawing the thumb across the hand the other way).

I duly note most normal decks have the number top-left.

The numbers that are either in the center or top left are the price of the cards that go in your deck and the combat value of enemies, for Talented Combatant and Banshee respectively. This means that they don't matter once they're in your deck for the one, and for the other, monsters are always put faceup on the table and thus not obscured at all, so I don't think the placement matters so much. Does that affect anyone's opinion?

I also like the second set. Cleaner, especially the antique look of the talented combatant.

Most definitely the first - the second is too plain and bland. I like lots of pretty eye candy on a card, and not too much open space.

What he said, but exactly the reverse:
I prefer the second set - the first one is too overdone. I like beautiful cards, but I like to see the important information at a glance and hate it when card art is cluttered.
