Any ideas about setting up a 3 player game?
Maybe a triangle shaped map?
Mix the ships?

I'd just let two players represent one faction (note the rulebook has a section on "team games" with multiple players on each side -- there are some important points in that section including one rule that players a team can only communicate in public and not in secret).

Since Imperials will usually have more ships, it might make sense to have 1 Rebel player and then 2 Imperial players on the same team, sharing the ships as evenly as possible. This will likely give all the players a roughly equal amount of ships to control and at the very least it will speed up game play since the Imperial player won't be planning moves for all the TIEs alone.

I've played this way with friends and it was a lot of fun.

[From a purely competitive stand point, the team with two players might be a bit of a disadvantage (as compared to if one player was playing and coordinate more effectively between all of the ships). You might mitigate this by giving the side with two players a small point advantage.]

Yes, good point.
Only thing is if a players ship gets destroyed he/she is out and will have to watch the rest of the game play out. Which could take a bit.
Just thinking of ways to play with 3 players/3 teams.

3 Teams will be no different when one team gets knocked out and waiting for the other 2 teams to duke it out. Besides which 3 way wars are never as satisfying as they sound.

If each player is only controlling one ship it won't last long, if the side with two players has one player lose all his ships, just shift some ships over. Played a 5 player game this weekend (3 Imps/2 Reb) where the Imps did just that. It was a glorious victory for the Rebels.

The games are short so a 3 way war where each side is different (Rebel, Imperial, Scum) might not be bad...especially if each side was given a particular victory condition.

You could even turn it into a campaign series of games. Like the Rebels need to destroy a particular Imperial ship (troop transport, supply freighter, etc).

The Imperials need to destroy all of the Rebel ships before they do this and escape.

The Imperials could have a major point advantage.

The scum, on the other hand, may need to destroy a random ship on a certain turn, or keep a ship alive, or steal something (bounty contract), or defend a certain quadrant of space, etc. If you make it so nobody but the scum know their goals and the goal is something they would succeed at if they don't let the other players know what they want...then they become a very suspicious traitorous kind of added threat that you're not too sure whether to ignore or fire at first. They could even have a chance to have a mundane objective like fly from one end to the other...or multiple objectives...they draw a card and each time it is a different objective. Once complete, they can do the next one...meanwhile the game goes on for the Imps/Rebels.

Maybe you could carry 'credits' for them from one stage to the next so depending on how well they complete their objects they get more credits to spend on better ships (more points available). I'm sure you could design something along those lines so it's an asymmetrical battle.

However, I don't think there is much chance you can make a 3 player variant balanced enough to be good for competitive players. If you just have a couple buddies who like star wars and want to play casual, I'm sure you could make up a quick story and give everyone roles that are more or less balanced and see what happens. Maybe play 3 matches where each team has the advantage each time to balance things out, etc.

Really, I think there's a lot of fun ways to play pew pew ships.
