Am I right in thinking that a CHARACTER action die result can't be used to move an army without a leader, and an ARMY die result can't be used to move an army WITH a leader?

No. The first part (you can't move an army without a leader when using a character die) is correct, but you can move any and all attached leaders with an army when you use an army die.

Muchas grassy *ss. Not too clear in the rules.

Finished my first game (solitaire) yesterday. Victory by the SP. I was much too timid in moving the ringbearers; they never moved more than two regions from Rivendell the whole game. I should have taken more chances, because I ended up effectively playing a purely military game, at which the SP seem to have an advantage.

You should try to move the Ringbearers at least once every turn, in an "average" game - and when possible, more than once.

Chris, this is exactly how my first few games went when this game first hit my table. My opponent finally got the idea to let go of wargame offense instincts and push the Fellowship as Roberto suggests - I was suitably appalled but he started dunking the ring consistently and I had to retool my Shadow strategy.

You're right - this is important, not just as a strategy for the FP player, but to play this game as it was intended - not just a slugging match between two armies (boring and predictable), but a game with the extra theme of the ringbearer's mission which will usually (?) decide the outcome. Can the FP armies hold off the Shadow forces long enough to enable Frodo to "dunk the ring"?

Looking forward to game 2, as soon as the paint dries on my figures.....
