Coloretto - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/5782
After Greg had departed, the four of us decided we needed to play one more short game. After ten minutes of arguing we finally decided on Coloretto, another new game for Glenn. This is a risk/reward set collection card game, which the rest of us have enjoyed a great deal. The mechanics are simple, you can flip and place a card into a row or you claim a row of cards that have been flipped. The challenge of the game is deciding when to choose a row and when to push your luck one draw further. A player can only count three colours for positive points and there are seven types in the deck. Every colour past the first three count as negative points towards your final score.
Once we picked our starting colours and finished explaining the game, it didn’t take Glenn very long to pick up some of the nuances of the game. There were many times when one of us would try to setup a pair of cards for ourselves only to have someone else put a third card in the row that we did not have a colour for and thus a path to negative points. About midway through the game we realized that we had all done a very poor job collecting only three colours as the minimum was six different colours for any of us! That lead to a very interesting game end as we all thought we had done well enough to win, so counting points was an exciting time. After we had finished counting the only excited person was Glenn, as he scored highest and won two of four games played!
Final scores: Glenn 39, Greig 34, Jen 32, and Ryan 27.
