What should I get?

Let's pretend money is no object. (Say, wouldn't that be nice?)

After reading some posts, I'm thinking this:
Core set x2
X-Wing x1
TIE Fighter x1
TIE Advanced x2
Y-Wing x2

Is that a good idea? Lots of replayabilty in there?

(Also, is it annoying to use a ruler? The only minis game I play is Heroscape which I love for its lack of a ruler!)

2x Core
1x X-Wing
4x Tie
3x Tie Advanced
3x Y-Wing

That would cover all the squads I'd want to build with the first wave... but yeah... no object!

What's the thinking behind 2 core sets? Is it for the extra dice?

You get extras of the base set stuff, and it's cheaper than buying 2xTIE/1xX-wing

You buy multiple core sets because it's cheaper than buying 2 TIE and 1 X-Wing expansions (MSRP, core is $40, 3 expansions are $45). In addition to just being cheaper, you get a bunch of extra components along the way (dice, measuring, etc).

Having said that, I do recommend at least picking up 1 X-Wing and 1 TIE expansion for the unique cards (pilots). Ironically, I bought 2 cores and 1 of each, then bought a second TIE so I could have 6 TIEs total (2 squads of 3), but it would have been cheaper to buy 3 core sets.

With 2 core sets, is it feasible for each side to play with their own damage deck? Thanks. Now thinking of picking up an extra core set.

I ended up getting:

1 Core (2 Tie + 1 X-Wing)
1 Tie
1 X-Wing
2 Y-Wing
1 Advanced

Walt Mulder wrote:

I plan to get another Core down the road at some point. It's a cheap way to get three ships and more dice, and extra bits for less than the cost of the same three ships. Since I want another X-Wing and Tie, for $5 more I get an additional Tie, dice, and the bits. As for cards you really don't need more than one of any card except for convenience.

So focus on getting at least one of everything (then you'll have all possible card types), then focus on the unit type mix you want to determine what to buy next, be it more expansions or more core sets.

My thinking behind my mix:

Even though it only has limited application in the game, I like the idea of a leader and a wingman, hence two X-Wing and two Y-Wing to start. It's about theme now isn't it?

For the Imperials, way back when in a Star Wars (WEG Original Edition) supplement it noted that Imperial Star Destroyers commonly carried around 6 squadrons composed of 12 ships per squadron divided into 3 flights of 4 ships each, with each flight divided into two elements of a leader and a wingman.

So my goal was a flight, with Vader's X1 rounding out the 4th ship until I get more down the road (another core most likely).

I guess it goes back to my miniature days where the idea was to build armies by squad/platoon/etc, not piecemeal.

I'm sure I'll get more down the road! However for my second & third Tie flights I plan on them being Interceptors and Bombers... but there's always room for more! gulp

I suppose no-one knows how many waves are expected, right?

I'm envisioning how much money (and space) it could take to keep up with the new ships...though new ships are always awesome.

Right. We only truly know of the Core Set, Wave 1 and Wave 2. We're guessing that there will be a Wave 3 that will contain at the least a B-Wing and a TIE Bomber. What else it may contain no one knows. Maybe a Tiberian Class Shuttle? Maybe that Shadows of the Empire wanna-be falcon? And after that, a Wave 4? What, Prequel ships? (Gawd I hope not).

Oh, come on!

Gamers will flock to Wave 4 featuring such treasures like:

Space Slugs!

Mynok Swarms!

Blockade Runner Escape Pod!

Cloud Car! (for those high altitude planetary skirmishes)

Snow Creatures in Deep Space Suits!

OK I'm done.

Oops, not yet! GR-75 Medium Transport.

This last one is actually possible as an exclusive "big" set, as it's only roughly a little over 7 lengths of an X-Wing long.

Edit: I actually just googled 1/270 scale GR-75 and found this thread over on the FFG forums.

Dude, you skipped all the game-specific fighters from X-Wing and TIE fighter we'd love to see but probably will never be popular enough to get solid releases (T-Wing, R-41...)

The Millenium Falcon sets a precedent for "Large ships" which will probably represent the biggest the game can go. I'd expect maybe a Lambda shuttle if they wanted to release another big ship, though my hopes would be on another smaller EU craft (TIE Defender? Tie Avenger? Assault Gunboat?)

Jeff! Thanks for those statistics. After getting this game I now have the urge to build up a squadron of Imperial craft along what 'canonically' constitutes a squadron, so I could field one squad element against another in a battle. 4 TIE/ln sounds good... though I'm also hoping to someday add 3 Assault Gunboats, and as few as 2 TIE Defenders to a potential Imperial force for X-Wing!

Also I find it a bit weird that the fight example in the manual shows a situation where the attacker throws 4 attack dice, while the core set only contains 3 of them...

I love the idea of this squad. I mean, 6 X-Wings and 12 TIEs! Cool! But I'm not sure I'll need so many from Wave 1, especially since Wave 2 is coming out soon (and I'm definitely getting 3-4 A-Wings, my favorite rebel ship!).

My original thought, which is $112 at CSI.

Maybe I'll start with this and then see if I want to order more from Wave 1 later. They'll probably stay in print for at least a few months.

I did:
2 x core
2 x Xwing
2 x Ywing
2 x Tie advanced
4 x Tie

Cores are a great deal. Three ships for less than 3 expansions, plus damage deck, dice, and extra tokens/movement guides.

Getting at least 2 of everything gives you a backup of everything (You bent my Wedge card! oh well, I have a spare).

It also gives you nice round numbers.
4 Xwings (the most you can take at 100pt)
2 Ywings
2 tie advance
8 tie fighters (the most you can take at 100pt)

That's exactly what I've ended up with after a few trips to my FLGS... I think it's a great set. I'm perfectly happy until Wave 2 comes along.

The ruler is no big deal - I thought it would annoy me, but you get to know the ranges well enough that you only need to use the ruler once in a while.

After looking through the boards for a while, this is what I went with, too. I also went through CSI, and at that price, you'll have free shipping. It'll also save like a lot of money that you could apply to wave 2

I think it would be cool to see a "Ground Battles" line of extensions, with AT-s and rebel ships duking it out. As long as they did it justice that could be really cool.

I'm seeing a lot of support for my original choice. I'm going with it! (Hey, $5 off. Sheesh, I've spent a lot at CSI.)

I'm sure I'll be back for more soon enough.
