According to my reading of the rules all doors must link up when you place a tile. That is, no door on one tile can be placed next to a wall on another tile.

So what happens when a player chooses to explore, and because of the configuration of nearby tiles and door positions on the tile drawn, he cannot place the tile he drew?

What happens to the character? Is he knocked out?

What happens to the tile that can't be placed? Discarded? Handed off to the next player?

Thanks for any help.

In the rules, look at the fine print under the picture showing the explore example. It describes your situation. I agree that this is an important point that should have been put into the body of the rules

The new tile has to be placed with the doors connected to as many doors as is possible. That just means that you have to connect every door to another door if you can, not that every door must always connect to another door.
