BSG v49: Flawed Creations
PLAYERS:
EXPANSION(s):
OBJECTIVE:
6
Pegasus
Kobol
I've asked you here to find out why the Cylons hate us so much.

I'm not sure I know how to answer that.
I mean, "hate" might not be the right word.

I don't want to fence with you.
I just want to know why.
It's what you said at the ceremony, before the attack.
You gave a speech that sounded like it wasn't the one you prepared.
You said that humanity was a flawed creation.
And that people still kill one another for petty jealousy and greed.
You said that humanity never asked itself why it deserved to survive.
Maybe you don't.

2 General Rules & Guidelines

» The Check-In Requirement is TWICE PER DAY.
I intend to run this game a little faster than my last. That said, the "hard ceiling" of 36 hours has not been changed.

• If you delay the game for 12 - 24 hours, you will receive a warning both publicly and by GM.
• If you delay the game for 36 hours, ALL decisions necessary to move the game along will be made for you.

These deadlines are flexible: You won't receive warnings if you're engaged in an active discussion, or if you've told me in advance that you'll have limited access for a certain period of time, etc.

» Do NOT review previous pages to refresh your memory, or to verify another's statement.
This game isn't as fun when everyone has perfect memory, so please don't use the forum record as a substitute for it.

• The same is true for keeping extensive notes.

» Do NOT edit your posts.
Quick fixes (e.g. typos, missing banner) made immediately after posting are the only exception.

» Follow play-by-forum conventions when posting.
The standard conventions apply, though there are two that I'd like to emphasize:

Please begin every post with your assigned character banner at 'medium' size. Banners are more than merely a tool for identification, they're a matter of aesthetics. These guidelines exist to promote a consistent visual theme, in which banners play an important part.
— When quoting someone else, please delete 'medium' from their banner code. (This shrinks the banner to a size more appropriate for a quote block.)
— If you are posting from a mobile device, you are excused from banner duty. Instead, please introduce your posts with, e.g., "Mobile Kat".
— You may be asked to change your banner a few times (e.g. if you reveal as a Cylon, or become President). I will GM you with your new banner code should this happen.

Bold any moves, actions or choices you want your character to perform, unless you are quoting an interrupt or skill check token.
— Please find a complete phrase to bold (e.g. "I'd like to play 3 - Investigative Committee"), just to avoid any embarassing confusion on my part.

3 Conditional Orders (CO's)

» Use CO's whenever you can.
CO's represent the single greatest influence on game speed: The more CO's you send, the faster this game will move.

• While I may suggest that you send in a CO if I think one is appropriate, you are never required to.

» CO's are private.

• Do NOT post any CO's publicly in the thread. They should only be sent to me via GM.
• Do NOT post a bolded action if it isn't your turn to act. This is a CO by another name.

» The following Default Standing CO's are assumed to be in effect for all players.
You may, of course, change any of them with your own CO's:

• All Character Abilities — PASS
Declare Emergency — PASS
Strategic Planning
— PASS when rolling to attack Cylon raiders
— PASS when risking a raptor to Launch Scout
— PASS when rolling attacks made by Cylon ships
Evasive Maneuvers — PASS if an unmanned viper is hit
Calculations
— PASS when resolving attacks against Cylon raiders
— PASS when resolving attacks made by Cylon ships

Conflicting CO's: If multiple players submit a CO to play the same interrupt, I will play the interrupt with the lowest strength. I'll break any ties by favoring the player whose turn is coming up the soonest.

» Certain CO's will be "read in", if doing so will not reveal secret information.

• If there is no actual choice to be made, I'll pretend you made the choice by CO (e.g. the Admiral draws two identical Destination Cards when jumping the fleet).
• If you don't have a playable interrupt in your hand, I will pretend you sent a "PASS" CO. (This won't give away hand information, because I will wait until I close the interrupt token before posting all CO's at the same time.)

4 The Secrecy Rules

The Secrecy Rules will be strictly enforced. Please review the official "Secrecy Clarifications" on the last page of the Official FAQ, which apply in addition to the following:

» Cards-in-Hand (Skill Cards & Quorum Cards)
You may claim to have a certain card (by name, not strength) if it is relevant to a live strategic discussion. You may, for example, claim to have an attractive action if someone is considering targets for an Executive Order, or mention the Strategic Planning in your hand during a debate over "FTL Control."

• You MAY volunteer this information without being asked for it first. (This is a change from how many people play.)

» Cards in Skill Checks
When playing one card into a skill check, you may describe the strength of your contribution as "HIGH" or "LOW". When playing multiple cards into a skill check, you may describe your contribution as "HIGH", "LOW", or "MEDIUM".

• You MAY discuss the number of cards you intend to play into a skill check in advance.
• You may NOT discuss the meaning of "HIGH", "MEDIUM", or "LOW".
• After the cards in a skill check have been revealed, you may NEITHER confirm NOR deny whether you contributed any of the revealed cards, including any Skill Check Abilities.

» Flaw Cards, Agenda Cards, and Loyalty Cards
The strictest application of the Secrecy Rules governs these cards, given their paramount importance to the game—but only if you have seen them and others have not.

• You may ONLY discuss cards you have seen in terms of polar opposites ("GOOD"/"BAD", "HUMAN"/"CYLON").
— You may FREELY speculate about any cards you haven't seen.
• Watch for indirect violations of the Secrecy Rules here. If the only reasonable interpretation of your statement violates Secrecy, it will not matter that you didn't name the offending card explicitly.

» Conditional Orders
Any and all discussion of specific CO's is a violation of Secrecy. This is because a CO, unlike anything else in the game, is a statement that will bind someone to a future course of action. To protect a Cylon's right to lie, CO's are entirely "behind the curtain."

5 House Rules & Variations

Pegasus Needs a Crew — To assign damage to Pegasus instead of Galactica, at least one character must occupy an undamaged Pegasus location.

» Executions

Exodus-Style Executions — We will use the Exodus rules for executions, which you can find on page 7 of the Exodus Expansion Rulebook.

Boxed Cylon's Revenge — Immediately before the humans would win the game, the last card in the Loyalty deck will be revealed. If that card is a "You Are a Cylon" card, whoever holds the other "You Are a Cylon" card may immediately choose ONE of the following:
— Reduce ALL resources by 1.
— Activate centurions.
— Damage Galactica twice.

Dead Men Hold No Titles — When a human character is executed, he or she passes any Title Cards before selecting a new character.

» Cylon Leaders

Human Fleet Hatrick — The "Human Fleet" location has been changed to read: "... and may Infiltrate Galactica (Cylon Leaders and Sympathetic Cylons only)."

Smooth Exit — If a Cylon Leader ends his or her infiltration from a location other than the "Brig", he or she may move to any Cylon location (including the "Resurrection Ship").

They Have a Plan — The possible Agendas for a Cylon Leader are as follows:

Agendas wrote:
Convert the Infidels — The humans have won AND the resource dials total 12 or lower.
Grant Mercy — The humans have won AND Food, Morale or Population is at 2 or lower.
Prove Their Worth — The humans have won AND at least 7 raptors/vipers are damaged or destroyed.
Reduce Them to Ruins — The humans have won AND 4 or more locations are damaged AND Morale is at 3 or lower.
The Illusion of HopeThe Cylons have won AND 7 or more units of distance have been traveled.
Salvage Their EquipmentThe Cylons have won AND 2 or fewer locations are damaged.

» Jasperhawk's Flaws
At the beginning of the game, each player—other than a Cylon Leader—will receive one Flaw Card from the Flaw deck.

• The Flaw Cards, and the rules governing their use, can be found here.
— There has been one update since BSG 285: The "Mission Specialist" Quorum Card now has priority over Impatient's benefit.
Two copies of each Flaw will be included in the Flaw deck.

FLAW CARDS & EXECUTING HUMANS
If you are executed as a human, you will discard your old Flaw and get a new one when you choose your replacement character. Your new Flaw will have the same status as your old Flaw:

If your old Flaw was unrevealed when you were executed: Your new Flaw will remain unrevealed, and you will not reveal your old Flaw when you discard it.
If your old Flaw was revealed for its penalty: Your new Flaw will be revealed immediately, and you will suffer its penalty instead.
If you'd already revealed and discarded your old Flaw for its benefit, you won't receive a new one.

» Treacherous Destiny

Treachery will NOT be added to the Destiny deck when it is built or rebuilt.
• ALL Treachery Cards discarded by human players will be shuffled into the Destiny deck.
• If the result of a skill check totals zero or less AND at least one human player played into the check, the check is retroactively deemed Reckless.
3 - Sabotage reads: "Action: Draw two Galactica damage tokens and choose one to resolve. (Pegasus may not be damaged with this ability.)"

» Character Additions & Variations
We will be using slightly modified character sheets for ELLEN, CAIN, ADAMA, HELO and KAT. Also, Daybreak's D'ANNA is an entirely new addition:

A summary of these changes:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
ELLEN
"Politically Adroit" — ... (These cards may come from outside of your Skill Set.)

CAIN
"Blind Jump" — ... The Admiral draws the second Destination Card from the top of the deck.
"Bent on Revenge" — You may not activate the "FTL Control" or "Engine Room" locations, and these locations may not be activated on your turn.

ADAMA
"Emotionally Attached" — You may not activate the "Admiral's Quarters" or "Airlock" locations, and these locations may not be activated on your turn.

HELO
"ECO Officer" — Whenever a die would be rolled during your turn, you make the roll in secret. Then, you may either reveal the result, or roll the die again. You can choose to reroll only once per turn.

KAT
"Hotshot" — When you would roll a die during your Action step, you may instead discard a Skill Card. Use the card's strength +3 instead of the die roll. You may not use this ability on "FTL Control."

D'ANNA
"Investigative Journalism" — After the Receive Skills step of your turn, look at the top card or the bottom card of the Crisis deck, then draw a Skill Card (it may come from outside your skill set).
"The Opera House Discovery" — Once per game, when a "You are a Cylon" Loyalty Card is revealed, you may prevent its secondary effect. Then, draw 3 Skill Cards (they may come from outside your skill set) or 1 Super Crisis Card.
"Boxed" — You may not draw skill cards while in the "Resurrection Ship" location.

Peanut Gallery question - Even for Cylon players? A current-player Cylon can't finish off Pegasus unless a human crewmember goes over there to stand on the last undamaged space?

As it turns out—and this will come as quite a surprise to many of you—I am illiterate. It's the only way I could have missed the fact that all six of you already checked into the other thread.

So the group is intact!

I do want to give everyone a little time to discuss these house rules, and (Canadian) Thanksgiving is this weekend. I know I'll be entertaining family, and I bet the other people with maple leaf flags under their avatars will be similarly occupied. So, after taking into account the holiday weekend, our schedule looks like this:

Weekend: Suggest changes and discuss any concerns regarding the proposed house rules.

Monday: I'll post the secret ballot that will determine which house rules we'll use, and 24 hours later ...

Tuesday: ... I'll edit that second post with a comprehensive list of all confirmed variant rules, post the turn order, and begin character selection.

Speaking of character selection, I already forgot to mention Jasperhawk's idea (more of a format suggestion than a house rule, but appropriate for the vote):

Musical Survivors — Characters will be assigned randomly. Category limits will be followed (we won't have six pilots); everyone will get a single veto in case they're saddled with a character they loathe; and anyone may preempt their random assignment by asking to play a Cylon Leader (unless that role has already been taken by someone earlier in turn order).

This is a great question, as I could see it being argued both ways. I'm inclined to make the change you're implying, and give Cylon players the option to hit Pegasus no matter what, but I'm interested to hear what others think. Thanks!

I am sorry, the invitations went out yesterday and all players have RSVP'd (I mistakenly created this in the base game PBF Forum, which is where everyone checked in; I only moved it to the variants forum recently.)

No problem, I didn't see another thread or a mention of how players were being gathered. I'll still read along for a while - should be a very interesting game!

I actually wouldn't mind doing this. I tend to play the same characters quite a bit, so forcing me out of my comfort zone would be a welcome change.

Hmmmm... picking the character I really feel like being is one of my favorite parts, but there's some appeal to jumbling it up. I would think though, if we went with that, that any person fourth and beyond in turn order gets a free veto on Helo that doesn't count towards their one veto if they so choose. If you're Helo late in turn order, that's a looooong time sitting and doing nothing.

Open Question: Should revealed Cylons be able to damage Pegasus notwithstanding this rule?

I don't have strong feelings either way for the open question...I would lean towards allowing the revealed Cylon to hit Pegasus, though.

Nah, it should be a valid tactic for the Humans to preserve Pegasus, because the corollary is that they're forcing damage to Galactica, which is a Cylon win condition.

I'm sure you already considered this, but would the character names by themselves work, much like custom rolls for assigning damage tokens? (I know nothing of geekrolls.)

Speaking of, I've decided we'll need a consensus to run with mandatory random assignments for everyone: Given the length of these forum games, I don't want to force a random assignment on someone who would prefer to choose their character. Since I've made it that much harder for this to happen, I've added a softer alternative that'll only require a majority vote:

Lip-Synching Survivors — Characters selection proceeds as normal. On your turn, you may opt to choose a character as normal, or opt for random assignment. If you opt for random assignment, your character will be chosen from ALL available characters, regardless of character type (max 1 Cylon Leader, though). You can vote "YES" to both, without worrying that one vote will screw up the other: Your vote for "Lip-Synching Survivors" will only matter if we don't reach a consensus on "Musical Survivors".

Anyways, without further ado, here is the house rules vote token. Please cut & paste it into a Geekmail, fill in the blanks, and send it to me.

I'm sure you already considered this, but would the character names by themselves work, much like custom rolls for assigning damage tokens? (I know nothing of geekrolls.)

Yeah, names alone would work easily, I was just hoping for something that would fit into a more visual presentation. I tried it at the start of V27 or 38, as Valen wanted a randomly-assigned character, but the formatting was an issue there (I didn't make any practice rolls first to see how it would turn out, and assumed that formatting would work the way it does when I do other rolls). Decided I'd take another stab at it here, but no dice. Well, no small dice.

As for lip-syncing, why bother putting it up for a vote? Any player could simply make the roll for themselves when it comes their turn in the character selection process - Oh, I see. You trade the ability to select a specific character for the ability to break the character type restrictions. So if player 1 chooses (or is assigned) a Military leader, player 2 can choose a specific non-Military character, or can choose to be randomly assigned a character, which gives a chance to be another Military leader.

Anyway, here's the die roller for just names. Jasperhawk chooses: 1custom14{Admiral Cain;Adama;Tigh;Helo;President Roslin;Baltar;Zarek;Ellen;Apollo;Starbuck;Kat;Boomer;Chief;Dee} -> ( Adama) -> Adama.

Yeah, that's the only reason I included it. Even if both musical survivor options are voted down, players can always choose their characters randomly—but the random choice will come from a smaller set of characters, adhering to the normal selection rules.

I missed this, sorry! Because the vote has already gone out, I'll just tack these on by the power of Greyskull divine CyMod edict:

• Players in late position (4th, 5th and 6th) will get to veto Helo for free.
Jimmythejet and cal2cool4u (BSG 285's Cylon Leader and (early) Revealed Cylon, respectively) will get to veto any Cylon Leader for free.

Though I won't force the issue, I'll sure as Hell try to sell it: I hope someone has their eye on playing a Cylon Leader! We should have one, at the very least to avoid the ugliness of a Sympathizer/Sympathetic Cylon. And I'd really like to spend more time with Cylon Leaders myself, as I'm working on that overhaul and need as much data as I can get!

Oh no. If no one picks a Cylon Leader, consider this my vote for the official No-Symp variant. A.) I have neither played it nor seen it played, so I'd like to see how well it does, and B.) Fuck the sympathizer mechanics, seriously. Balancing through averaging the outcome over a large sample of games played is NOT balancing at all.

I have a feeling that it won't come to that, though.

It won't. D'anna would be my first pick.

Wonderful - 4 D'Annas would be played concurrently in variant games.
