Title looks very interesting, but how can a Medieval wargame NOT have Crossbowmen?

Are they abstracted somehow?

Presumably some of the regular soldiers are using crossbows... but (unlike longbows) isn't an advantage so isn't identified explicitly any more than guys using spears or swords.

Hmmm. Crossbows were far superior penetrating armor than the longbow.

At Agincourt, the longbow could not penetrate the French steel armor of the Men at Arms. The longbow was not the super weapon that it was proproted to be.

Kinda disapointed that it is not accounted for in some 'chrome' rule somehow.....

As I recall, rate of fire and longer range were the longbow advantages, and unhorsing the chivalry was more important than outright kills against the rider.

It's not really a battle game.

When it is your turn to send a VASSAL move, the wait is excruciating. When it's my turn, well, I've been busy.

At this scale it matters little. If you want to compare contemporary weapons systems, play Men of Iron.

Longbows also sowed terror at a range where troops were helpless to retaliate, making control far more difficult to maintain. Most battles of the era were more about control than killing.

As is the game of course.

This isn't a hex/counter war game. It's an area control game. There is no real need for troop classes. Some can be hired, some can add to your battle rating, some can absorb hits and some can be used against castles.
