Hi.

I'm working on a game at the moment, but it's on very early stage and this thread is not about the project itself.

I can't work on the game while I'm at work (well, at least not with full attention) , so I need something to help me quench the thirst
I need game design theory - not necessarily stuff from well known or even professional designers. Anything on boardgame design (and general game design) would do.
I already spent two days digging into this forum (8 pages back), looking for similar threads and ended up reading a lot of stuff - good stuff, but still not what I'm looking for. I subscribed for two podcasts (can't remember the names, still haven't listen to them).

The only thing I've found is an article by James Earnest (Cheapass games) - "Keeping it simple", which is a very fine piece of text, but this only made my appetite bigger

Any usefull links?

Are you looking mostly for free online articles, or do books also fit into your schedule?

I can give you more stuff when I get home, as most of my reading material is not here at work, but I read gamasutra.com regularly. It's primarily a video game site, and about every week or so there is a design article. Those frequently are broad enough that they apply to more than just the digital realm, though.

You may also want to check out the boardgame designers forum ( bgdf.com )

A good site for articles is http://hyperbolegames.com/
Its a blog with some articles about designing his own games but also has a lot of guest articles on design.

Bellwether games has a series of game designer interviews

http://bellwethergames.com/featureddesigners.html

Disclaimer: I have written articles/interviews on these sites

I'm a huge fan of Mark Rosewater and his design articles. They do focus on Magic: The Gathering, since that is the game Mark has been designing for 15ish years, but many of the principles he discusses are extremely applicable to game design in general.

If you're looking for books, I'd highly recommend The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell. It's focus is on video games, but a lot of the principles overlap with board games. Tracy Fullerton's Game Design Workshop is also quite good.

I blog about game design (among other topics) at Nothing Sacred Games.

The Games Journal has an old three part series that I have found particularly helpful.

Tell Me a Story
The Ticking Time Bomb
The Agonizing Decision

Im only new to design but for me a fundamental set of questions are;

1 what type of game am i making?
2 who are its target audiences?
3 what will they enjoy (theme, mechanics, length of time, interaction levels etc etc) in such a game?

Many other important design questions and answers flow from these foundation questions.

i started a thread on player enjoyment and motivation i found very informative at http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/819388/understanding-gamers-... lots of good juice there.

Which also led me to a new book called 'Eurogames: The Design, Culture and Play of Modern European Board Games' theres a short thread on here http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/851830/new-book-eurogames-th... which i definately can recommend as a worthwile read as it is based on PHD research into a large BGG survey.

I personally havent found a single bombtastic resource site for game design theory other than the imperfect BGDF but if there is one i have many links to add.

If you have a google account you can PM me - i might be able to provide you with access to a games dev google site i set up for our personal game dev group. Its no where near as comprehensive as id like it to be but it will still save you dozens of hours of looking around...

Digging through old forum threads has gotta be one of the least efficient ways of getting up to speed fast. I wonder if there is room for yet another crowd source game dev site which functions more like a resource directory...
