I decided I wanted three dementional asteroids for this game, and thought who better to ask than the folks at my FLGS who play customized miniature games all the time. I explained, expecting them to suggest a fancy how-to method. Their solution was a thousand times more elegant:

Spend four bucks on lava rocks.

I love those guys.

Where did you get the plastic bases for the rocks?

She wore! She wore! She wore a yellow ribbon! She wore a yellow ribbon in the merry month of May, And when I asked her why she wore that ribbon,

They *used* to be easy to find, but right now I'm having little luck except for non-clear black ones.

Essentially GW used 'em a lot, and many others still use 'em. RAFM and Iron Winds (Ral Partha) sell figures that include them (Silent Death, Crimson Skies, etc), but they're not listed on their web site individually or as packs. The black ones are from Dream Pod 9 and are available via Noble Knight Games.

I didn't really check eBay, but I did see at a glance a seller in the UK selling tons of them, so I'm sure they're still out there but for right now I'm going to bed.

http://www.craftparts.com/ sells wood squares and circles (many with holes pre drilled) as well as bags of 2" dowel pins. If you already have some spray paint and goods glue, you can get dozens of stands for under a dollar a piece. $5 for lava rocks at home depot and $10 for wood bits (including shipping). I can't wait to get my wood in to craft these up and post some hawt pix!
