In a recent 2-player game of Space Empires, working through the "I dare you to play this" scenario, we had an interesting development. My son and I had randomly populated the deep space counters without pre-agreement on numbers of warp points or doomsday machines. He had expanded rapidly and explored or cleared out all but one deep space marker, not far from a colonized deep space planet. The unexplored marker was inaccessible, surrounded by "Danger" markers and a black hole. Out of a sense of completeness, he felt the need to get in there and find out what was in that hex. So he went for and successfully completed a black hole slingshot with a cruiser or scout.

He explored the remote area, only to find: doomsday machine!

His ship was destroyed, and the doomsday machine then headed straight for and consumed his nearby planet.

Lesson learned?

That sense of completeness is a double-edged sword...

Aren't Danger markers removed from play once revealed?

Ah, yes. I think he'd explored but not flipped the markers. Or, maybe we were playing it wrong.

One of the cool things about this game is that you can have house rules. I generally do NOT like house rules for games. I think the designer is the arbiter of the game and that it needs to be kept within the rules.

But, SE seems to 'work' with more house customizations. So, keeping Danger counters could be one if you wanted, I guess!
