Is there a game out there...

- about developing an island from scratch. Where several people are competing to be named in the hall of fame of the island as the best developer, strategist, economist and ruler....

- the island is a mysterious one. It is shrouded with lush green trees, wild tribes rule parts of it, wild animals roaming the land, there are sites of lost heritage and raw resources to be gained and used....

- the players need to maintain their economic state, find ways to turn resources/services/goods/livestocks to cash, so to attract people to come and be a part of the island community....

Okay... I am not going to write more what I expect to experience from this game. In my mind, it is a crossover of Catan, and video games like Tropico 3 and Civilization V. Then you can figure out what kind of game I am looking for.

Is there a game like that out there? If there is, is it any good?

Hawaii came to mind, but I haven't played it and therefore don't know how close it meets your requirements or how good it is to play.

Please also include a shape shifting smoke tendril, ancient ruins, inexplicable magnetism, and a magical cave that keeps the balance between good and evil.

Not Hawaii, I'm afraid. The OP is asking for something akin to Civilization; Hawaii is a mechanical Euro.

It does not involve an island, but Neuland is close in other respects.

Hmmmm

Alien Frontiers sounds close
Quote:
Do you have what it takes to be a deep space colonist? An alien frontier awaits the brave and daring! This new planet will be harsh, but if you have the skills to manage your resources, build a fleet, research alien life, and settle colonies, the world can be yours.

Roll and place your dice to gain advantages over your opponent and block them out of useful areas of the board. Use Alien Tech cards to manipulate your dice rolls and territory bonuses to break the rules. Steal resources, overtake territories, and do whatever it takes to get your colonies on the map first! Don't dream it'll be easy, though, because the other players will be trying to do the same thing.

*edit* Laura tells me I'm completely wrong whistle

No, no, no! You don't develop the colony at all, it's just the thin theme pasted on a worker placement game (that has innovative dice mechanics, where each die is a space ship). Alien Frontiers is a whole lot of fun, but it is not about the Frontier, at all.

is a new game that might interest you.

Goldland has some of the exploration and fighting animals, with tokens for best/most of certain things.

I don't know of any game that has all of those things.

When it is about Robinson Crusoe.... It might hit the spot! Or wouldn't it....

The other game, is it good? I never heard of it.

I've watched the Dicetower's video review. The aims in the eight rounds it has did not reach to the degree of what I am looking for. Btw, nice game!

Goldland is out of print and a bit hard to find, but if you have a chance to play it, give it a try.

That's awesome! Only that I am thinking of a game that really resemblance to the real effort of developing an island. The game could be a reference to people who are thinking about building fame and glory in an island in the real world. I am imagining the game to use hex tiles like in Catan. Starting with forest, river, lake, mountain, hills, volcano then to road tiles, village tiles, market tiles, farm tiles, police tiles.... Then further on there are hotel tiles, army base tiles, industrial tiles, dock tiles, shopping complex tiles etc etc...

It could be tiles of any shape, whatever.... As long as the game is good and has the essence of abovementioned things.

If there is no games like that out there, please someone buildnone

I believe it will be awesome.

There is Taluva which is getting a re-release with a facelift soon. It's not as spooky as all that, but it is an island with huts and a volcano, and the mechanics are very solid. The only reason it's not in the BGG top 20 already is because of the beefcake islander posing on the cover of the original edition.

edit: If you're really looking for a modern civilization island game with an economic engine and sleek mechanics, then Hawaii is the closest you'll get from existing games.

Still, Taluva has the mostly naked guy...it's a tough choice. laugh

No island, but you still might be interested in The Great Zimbabwe.

My copy arrives from Essen this week, so still no idea whether this is a good game, but the track record is solid. Could be longer than you wanted.
