Session Report: Cartagena- First play

Players: Edwin, Elijah, Wayne, Terence

A bunch of us Gamecon 1 volunteers were familiarizing ourselves with the various games we would be demoing at Gamecon and we were playing our way through the list of games when we hit this game. I’d never played Cartagena and had no clue about the strategy for this game, so I basically tried to maximize each of my 3 actions as much as possible by either moving my meeples as far as possible, or by taking as many cards as possible. Elijah sprang to an early lead, putting his first meeple on the boat. This woke everybody else up, apparently, as everyone began putting abit more effort into moving their meeples. Since this was a familiarization exercise, Elijah suggested that we stop the game once someone got 4 meeples on the boat. As luck would have it, I had just deployed my fifth from the starting point, wasting an action.

Shortly after, I also moved my first meeple into the boat. By this time, Elijah had moved another 2 meeples on the boat using some ‘key’ cards, moving considerable distances as ‘key’ icons on the passageway were suddenly nowhere to be found. He looked set for a win. Fortunately, he was also all out of cards…. On my next move, I happened to have three ‘key’ cards on hand and moved 2 of my meeples onto the boat! It was now 3 for 3 with Wayne and Edwin moving frantically to catch up with Elijah and me.

I also had one meeple on the last icon next to the boat- any card I played would win me the game next turn. I was just praying that Elijah didn’t have the cards to win during his next turn. On his turn, he drew a few cards, hoping for the right one…. Miracle of miracles! He wasn’t able to move his last meeple on board, and I won by the skin of my teeth!

Final Score: Edwin 3, Elijah 3, Wayne 1, Terence 4
