This is a great game, but could use a little more player interaction through combat. Besides, how can 14 different cultures interact without some conflict? This combat variant involves two phases: Combat Assessment and Actual Combat.

Combat Assessment

As soon as the current player enters a space containing another player's ship, conduct a combat assessment:

1. If the space is a surface city, asteroid, or spaceport, there is no combat and play continues as normal. (Ships cannot conduct combat while landed)

2. If both players have no lasers, there is no combat, and play continues as normal. (There can't be a fight if no one has any weapons)

3. A player without shields to protect his ship against the other player's lasers may choose to escape to the Galactic Base. (If you can't protect your ship, make a run for it!) If the player escaping is the current player, his move ends at the Galactic Base.

4. If none of the above applies, go to actual combat.

Actual Combat

The winner of combat is the player with the highest total of the following three items:

1. each player rolls three dice and records the highest two numbers
2. the number of lasers and shields on your ship
3. the player with the highest pilot skills rolls one die (if both players have the same skill level, they each roll one die)

If the results are the same for each player, repeat until there's a winner.

1. The winner receives one fame token.
2. The loser pays the winner 100 credits to negotiate a truce. If he cannot pay the full amount, he pays what he can and takes one infamy token.
3. The loser then returns to the Galactic Base and pays the bank 100 credits for ship repairs. If he cannot pay the full amount, he pays what he can and takes one infamy token. If the loser is the current player, his move ends at the Galactic Base.
4. If the winner is the current player, his move continues as normal -- moving to the next space(s), fighting pirates, etc.

No wars between cultures in this game.
It's just pick and deliver game in space.

Merchant of Venus is a game of interstellar trade and
exploration for one to four players

The system have been at war before this era. Now is the time of rebuilding the "Gold age" by restablishing the trade route between systems.

If you want to added the combat, it wll increase the duration of gameplay time. Maybe the combat system will come in next expansion if there's any planned.

I don't think the war was between the various systems in the sector; it was a war against the alien Rastur who had invaded, causing the sector to be essentially quarantined so the Rastur wouldn't invade further.

While Combat was fun in the original game the Swindling and Revolution rules were really good addons too. They let you steal goods and spaceports from other players.

This point is just bad. It could be used, as quick teleport to Galactic Base. Event if it ends turn, this could be great option sometimes.
