The AMT is a good example of why politicians cannot be trusted. Explain it to anyone and their opinion of legislators automatically goes down 10 points. Every time. Our tax code is ridiculous.

How about we create one committee from each party for each government department to solve the issue? The proposal from each committee goes to a national vote. The winning proposal is adopted, the losing proposal's committee are put to death.

One person cuts the cake and the other person decides which committee to kill.

I think you could find a lot of folks on both the left and right who would be okay with the "fiscal cliff".

And, by the way, "cliff" is not the right noun to use- the effects and repercussions would not be nearly so immediate as the debt ceiling fiasco. We could easily handle going over it for a little while, and then figure out a more permanent way forward using the post-sequester and post-Bushcut levels as a baseline.

...

Also, I think people at all levels are plenty woken up, as a matter of fact. The problem is that negotiation is hard, especially when some of the parties involved are opposed to the very idea of negotiation.
