I just read a few minutes ago on the internet that the can opener was invented nearly fifty years after the invention of the can. wow surprise

I guess they had no Steve Jobs in that time ... shake

Also, the invention of canned food was prompted by a cash prize offered by the french military, and finally rewarded during Napoleon's reign.

They could have always used knives or bayonettes to open the cans.

Exactly. They were champagne bottles. James Burke explains the connections on how this became canned/preserved food.
