For those who are relatively new to the hobby of Board Gaming (like myself), Tom Vasel has become a virtual friend and board game mentor. Not only is he the most prolific reviewer on BGG, he brings the most energy to his reviews.

So I ask you the following question: What about Tom Vasel's reviews have you most enjoyed?

I tried to start this discussion with an earlier post (pasted below for reference). My attempt at creatively approaching the topic fell flat. I was expecting people to comment on Tom's neckties, how game components are poured onto the table, his daughters, his side-kick in Miami, his love of the western theme, the backgrounds in his videos, etc... but instead people thought it was a serious suggestion and moved the thread to the King of Tokyo game page.

Proposed new monster for King of Tokyo:
Monster Name: Mountain of a Man Giant Among Men

Starts with the following 3 special abilities:
1) "Shut That Door!" laser stare attack
2) "As Such" confusion fog
3) "Can't we come up with some new themes?!?!?" rage attack

What else would you add to this proposed new monster??

So I ask: what is the most interesting thing about Tom Vasel's reviews? What is the most memorable? What do you like the best?

PS: if you want to bash Tom, keep it to yourself and move along...this thread is not for that!

I for one am grateful for Tom and his reviews. If there is a game I'm even remotely interested in, the first thing I do is to see if Tom has done a video review of it.

Though I don't always agree with his opinion, Tom has played a lot of different games and has a great understand and passion for this hobby, and it shows.

Thanks Tom! Keep up the good work!

I don't want to bash Tom, but I also don't think we need a thread in General Gaming dedicated to him. He has a Dice Tower guild; couldn't sycophantic threads be isolated there?

If one doesn't know about his vids, they wouldn't discover that.

I think things like this are useful, and don't do any harm.

Then I'm making a thread for Hello Gregor.

Tom has a knack for getting across the essentials of a game in a short amount of time. And I love his overflowing enthusiasm for boardgaming in general, though obviously not for every single game.

I also enjoy Hello Gregor's thoughtful, original reviews.

Yeah...when you throw someone's game off a roof, be prepared for just a tad bit of backlash when you release your own game. I am looking forward to Tom's published game, but I am sure there will be criticism. Tom can take it though.

Anybody remember Scott Nicholson's thrashing of Caylus and its fans? I know it was intended for humor, but there was some poor taste thrown in (William Attia on the front of a pair of briefs being worn by a "Caylus Commando") Im sure William Attia didnt give a rip. But I am a bit surprised a video hasn't appeared poking a few jabs at Tulipmania.

Exactly! What possible connection is there between Tom Vasel and 'General Gaming'.

What we really need are 40 more threads about:

Which game should I buy?
Do you shelve your games with the box top to the right or to the left?
Dice and luck in games.
Should I ignore the 90% of threads that don't interest me or comment on them?

The discussions about Tom Vasel and his reviews. They have sometimes been enjoyable.

The reviews themselves I never watch, because I rarely watch review videos. It's not a principle, I just don't watch them.

Did you enjoy the pre-video written reviews?

Some of them, yes. Can't remember exactly which ones I read though, because it was a while ago. But I stand corrected, because I remember one of them being a very informative – oh yes, it was Bolide.

OK, so the written review of "Bolide" was what I've enjoyed the most (because honestly, the rattle about his reviews hasn't been THAT fun).

My favorite moment from his reviews was from his earlier review of Through The Desert (for some reason he has done more than one video review of it). But while he was talkimg about it, his little girl reached into the bowl of plastic camels, grabbed one, and popped it in her mouth and started chewing. He stopped, looked at her and asked her "Did you just eat one of the camels?"

I find his reviews very useful. The intro branding - including this
little bit - is automatically skipped.

Somehow I don't feel like there'd be any opposition if the thread was titled "Let's start a thread about Wil Wheaton".

IMHO, Tom has contributed a lot to the board gaming community (whether you like him or not-- that can't be denied), and a thread about him is entirely relevant in a general gaming forum.

Then I believe you may be missing the point on what I believe to be the reason for the pouring out of the components.

And, I must admit I didn't get it at first.

I'd sort of suspected it before, but it was watching his review of Fortress America that made it really click for me:

Probably. I'm not one who looks for hidden meanings.

As art, IMO, it fails. As anything else, it serves no value to me.

It's really not hidden.

The more components there are the longer it takes, for example.

It's a really direct way of letting you see what the game consists of.

I vividly remember after watching my first one, I stared blankly at the screen for about 20 seconds and then said "I think I need to watch that again".
