This is the sign-up thread for an online Stone Age tournament. Respond here if you are interested and subscribe to see updates on when it might kick off. Please put your Yucata ID in your post.

The game takes quite a long time, so differently from the other tournaments I've run this one will be run as an all-play-all league, with the top four players in the completed league playing each other in a final, and maybe the next four in a runners-up play-off final.
All the league games will be played simultaneously, so you are signing up to play a lot of Stone Age games at once.
These will all be 4-player games.

The all-play-all approach dictates the size of the tournament to some extent, so it will have 16, 28 or 40 players, depending on how many people sign up. So if there are 16 players you will playing in 5 league games, 28 means 9 league games, 40 means 13 league games. This may take some time to resolve. If we end up with extra players (i.e. more than one of those figures) then they won't be in - it is first come, first served, e.g. if 30 people sign up then the last two won't be in the contest.

We'll be playing on Yucata.de and updating a geeklist with the progress/results. So you need a Yucata ID to take part. Joining Yucata is easy, free and they send you no spam. It is advised to use the same user ID that you use on BGG.

Yucata games are turn-based and don't require you to be online for the complete game - you just go on, play your turns and log off.

I've been enjoying the Roll Through the Ages tourney as my introduction to Yucata (despite sucking at it) so will eagerly try this out too.

I've been looking into how to set up one of these all-play-all tournaments and I haven't yet found a published algorithm for working out the tables. There are plenty around for tournaments where each game is 1 vs 1, but nothing yet for 4 player games.

I may now have found a forum with a solution for this.

16 players isn't too bad, I could probably work it out - it is only 5 games each.
But 28 players (9 games each) or 40 (13 games each) is a killer.

I haven't fully thought this through, nor put any numbers on paper, but if there's a multiple of four players, wouldn't it be possible to just do all the combinations in about one fourth that many games?

We're around 16 players now. Just using letters, wouldn't that be something like this (each line is a game):

ABCD
EFGH
IJKL
MNOP

AEIM
BFJN
CGKO
DHLP

AFKP
BGLM
CHIN
DEJO

OK, now that I'm looking at it, it'll take more than 4 games for 16 players to all play each other.

It will take 5 games. Each game each player faces 3 new opponents, so 15 total opponents would take 5 games to play.

Coming up with the combinations shouldn't be too difficult for the remaining two games of the scheme above.

Edit: Helps if I know the alphabet in order.

Edit 2: I'm starting to think this doesn't make sense after all. There don't seem to be enough combinations, but I've started a spreadsheet to figure it out.

If we can't find an algorithm to determine the full list of games we should play and have to go for a random method then:
Poll
How many 'league' games should each of us play? Tick as many as you like
5
6
7
8
9
10
11
12
13
Don't Know

Its all greek to me.
I accidentally deleted the poll, so had to find it again!

Edit: actually please delete that poll so people don't answer it for fun and mess up whoever's that poll is.

Sign me up! I loved RttA but man it gets repetitive when you play 3-4 games per week. I actually like the idea of a heavier / more strategic game as a tournament... and I love Stone Age.

We can see how many we get and do all (X choose 4) combinations if it isn't too high. That'd be the fairest. I assume that'll be too high, though, given the popularity of Stone Age. And, I guess some people will want to drop out....

...... so, whatever you decide Tony!

Edit: Yucata userid sharky6000.

A quick count sees 19 people so far.
So I expect we will have no problem hitting the 28 number and probably could hit 40.
40 will be the maximum if we hit that.
