My friend just had a baby, but still wants to board game. We used to play over VASSAL, but he doesn't have time to play a full game out ATM, so we're looking for games that can be played 100% by email.

We've been thinking about Through the Ages, Eclipse, or Dominant Species, but all of these seem to have a fair amount of player interaction during turns. I worry it'd be difficult to actually play a turn without the other players around to do what they need to do. Does anyone have any experience with these games by email? Are there ways to simplify things to allow the mechanics to work?

Does anyone have other recommendations?

Have you checked yucata out? They have quite a few light/middle wt multiplayer games and the site handles all the moves/saving. All you need to do is login each day and see which games you need to make moves in.

We've looked at a few and have even played A Few Acres of Snow there, but we're leaning heavily toward Through the Ages thanks to the boardgames-online implementation. We haven't tried it yet, but should start seeing if it works today.

How easy is PBEM via VASSEL?

It depends more on the mechanics of the game than on VASSAL. If you're trying to play a game that's suitable for PBEM (no or few interrupts, blocks of player actions which aren't too short), then it should work well.
