I am hopelessly addicted to Phantom Leader (on my iPad 2). It's really great!

Anyway, I never played the original version of Phantom leader but have played both Field Commander: Rommell and Field Commander: Alexander (both are good games but not nearly as great as Phantom Leader, in my opinion). With this said, is Hornet leader a good purchase for me? It's fairly expensive and I'm still fully immersed in Phantom Leader. Is it different enough to justify the purchase?

I'd agree with Kevin - though I think I've played PL more often.

There's no political track in HL, which is a big difference - but for all the reasons Kevin lists, there are lots of extras, too, so I doubt that you would be unhappy with both.

The new updated version of the Phantom Leader boardgame is supposed to come out sometime soon, too.

You may want to consider Thunderbolt Apache Leader as it's similar to HL and PL but changes things up (tactical board is way more detailed, specific damage on aircraft, pilots are separate from aircraft, etc.).

hornet leader carrier operation should be a must buy if you love Air Leader series.

you got modern weapons, stealth capabilities , harrier USMC campaigns, Harrier Nap of the Earth (NoE) capabilities, SA point (Awareness) that can make a slow pilot act fast , did i mention multitide of modern weaponry ?

great components, great choice of planes (E2C Hawkeye, Hornet from F18C to Growler, Harrier AVB, A6 , A7, Tomcats with long range phoenix missiles, F35 Stealth strike fighter undetectable except at range 1 if you lost stealth check..

TLDR : Buy HL CAO now

I've been reading through the messages in the Hornet Leader forum for a while. I must say that I'm very impressed by the (almost) unconditional praise for this game. It is not very hard to think about what I should buy myself for this Christmas. I'm already waiting for the holiday with this game, interspersed with a few episodes of JAG now and then, it should make the days fly by very fast.

Phantom Leader does have the interesting Political track which affects which missions can be chosen. And it is getting an upgrade which will probably make it as content-heavy as Hornet Leader CAO (or close, anyway).

My problem with Hornet Leader CAO is the use of SA points to give pilots an extra attack phase during a turn. IMHO, this makes the game too easy and seem somewhat unfair, since the enemies only get one attack. There are optional rules which can be added to make the game more difficult to win (and add some interesting gameplay, too), though.

I like them both. But they are very similar in gameplay. Thunderbolt Apache Leader uses a similar system but has significantly different gameplay.
