I thought it may be good and interesting if wargamers had a more united voice on BGG. So, recently, I had the idea of starting a focus group. Skip Franklin and I invited a dozen or more folks who played wargames (and often other stuff too) to join us in writing about subjects that may be of interest to some of the wider BGG community.
Of course, wargaming isn't going to be everybody's thing, but then again it struck us that there is a demand to know more about the hobby. Recent threads here have confirmed that notion.
Our primary purpose is to encourage that interest in whatever way we can. Perhaps we can do something similar for wargames to that which Tom Vasals' musings group does for Euros.
The new group is called Forward Observer and we decided that our first topic of conversation should be Introductory Wargames.
This is a subject that many BGG-ers ask about and may be interested in reading about, so we've all been typing away adding our thoughts on it.
To be honest, this is a subject that has been better covered than some, so what we put out this time may be a mite shorter or less detailed than what comes later. That should make for a good, easy start.
In future, we will be discussing different genres and specific games.
The first Forward Observer should be out very soon.

My recent discovery of Vassal has rekindled my long dormant hope that I might actually find wargaming opponents and be able to play.

In the future, I will also make a post. I have not yet decided what it will be about but I'm sure I will choose to write about something exciting! I will be sure to let everyone know every step in this process.

Ditto. Most of my wargaming experience has come vie PBEM. It would be neat to get more of a feel of community and participate in discussions. I tried to break into Consimworld a couple times...but its a lot less accessible than the Geek. Anyway, I was unsuccessful. Maybe I just have room for one gaming forum in my life. Anyway, go grognards!

I'm certainly grateful to David (Admiral Fisher) and Skip (darksan) for taking the point on this endeavor. I hope this initial project will do three things...
1) assist those who are already interested in trying war games to make intelligent choices about where and how to start.
2) induce those who are not so interested yet into giving war games a try.
3) and as an ongoing benefit, stimulate dialogs on strategies and tactics here on the Geek to make better players out of those who already play some war games.

Yep, that covers it nicely, Scribbie.
The first thread is maybe a week to ten days away from hitting the Geek. We are going to show our discussions and then also highlight 6 in-print games and one OOP that are our chosen best intro games. Many others will also be mentioned in the discussion bit of the thread.
This first thread won't be as full of nitty-gritty S and T discussion as some later ones will. It's an intro to get everyone talking.
All of us at Forward Observer are pretty excited about it!
