The best book I have ever read:

Train Your Brain....Engage Your Heart....Transform Your Life: A Course in Attention & Interpretation Therapy
http://www.amazon.com/Train-Your-Brain-Engage-Heart-Transfor...

By Dr. Amit Sood at the Mayo clinic,
http://www.mayoclinic.org/bio/12394378.html

One of his main points is that we too often don't pay attention to what is going on (become informed) and then jump too quickly to interpreting things according to our prejudices.

Sound familiar?

This book is about training your attention to be in the present, not ruminating about past regrets or future fears.

Also about interpreting what happens according to higher principles such as compassion, acceptance, gratitude, forgiveness, celebration, etc.

In more scientific terms, it's about increasing activity in the higher cortical center of your brain, particularly the pre-frontal cortex, which is associated with imagination, creativity, peace, impulse control, strategic planning, etc.

So you also learn to stay out of the lower limbic center of your brain, which is associated with stress, anxiety, depression, etc.

The author has developed a self-help program called Attention and Interpretation Therapy. It integrates Western neuroscience with Eastern ideas.

The author gives the following equation:

Suffering = pain +
lack of gratitude + lack of compassion + lack of acceptance + unforgiveness + lack of higher meaning.

This book is not BS. This is a serious book. It has over 500 citations to scientific journals. The guy is a director at the Mayo clinic.

BGGeeks I often find tend to come from a more tangible-reality-based world view (empiricists or positivists). So I'm not surprised to see some people here dismiss something like this, which is in the area of psychology or spirituality.

To cynics: I have no affiliation with the author and make no money nor get any benefit from recommending this. I'm not selling anything, and this is not a religion.

Sure, it might not be for you. But I've found it greatly valuable so I wanted to pass it along.

Many forms of pseudoscience are rooted in real science. The citations are mostly neurology and psychology. The pseudoscience begins where the author leaps from these fields to mysticism.

Michael Egnor, one of the top apologists for "intelligent design" creationism, is a tenured professor of pediatrics at SUNY Stony Brook, and has a number of publications (not about evolution) in peer-reviewed journals. That doesn't make his views on evolution any more valid.

The book is BS. Look at Dr. Sood's resume. He's barely more than a GP, and certainly has no authority in matters of psychology. His specialty is internal medicine.

Here's a tip: Anything telling you it will "TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE!" won't.

Read "Thinking Fast and Slow" instead. Similar subject matter, but delivered with authority and a lack of touchy feely spiritual bullshit.

I haven't read the book, but if you look at his CV, he was at the Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Arizona (a research university with teaching college) where Andrew Weil is (or at least was as of a few years ago when I was there) leading the program. It's not bullshit. There are many trained physicians and researchers interested in non-traditional medicine and interventions, and trying to understand the connection between the brain and body...and "it" is that makes bodies not respond and behave in ways we think are logical.

I don't argue - at all - that it's possible to make something sound professional and "legit" when it's not, but having read quite a bit of Weil's stuff and being where he worked, I would have confidence that it's not complete bullshit, though may not be what is acceptable (or understandable) to some (meaning Prediminantly westernized patients).

I also have a lot of respect for someone that just works at Mayo. Having read about the history of the hospital and how they approach healthcare, I truly wish US medicine and the health industry would follow that model. I am biased to be more interested in what a physician working in that model notices about treatment.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I think your description challenged some peoples metaphysics.
Whether they realise that they have metaphysics, and what those metaphysics are, are other questions.

Lets do a bit of calculus here.

Snood: Academic Rank: Associate Professor of Medicine = "barely more than GP"

Jason: BGgeek: microbadges for "philosopher", "MMA fan", "I think outside the box", "dominant species fan", "Stop Whining" = credibility of X

Give values for X.

The metaphysics here is badly done, with overlapping and non-independent categories. Augurs poorly.

Your post is a load of horseshit.

Let's do the calculus for Pinook: No microbadges + doesn't post under real name + picture of a red frog = credibility of X.

So we should listen to you instead of me because?

You need a measure of change for calculus.

You fortunately provided one.

I'm sorry if I'm wrong, but this book sounds like a complete abstract of common sense reflexions, with a fancy new dress on it...

Getting people to change is hard. But this I saw recently on Netflix was pretty impressive. I wish they had explained what vipassana was though...

The point is, if you need a book, you're not helping yourself, someone else is helping you.

But that thing you're looking up in a book might just be a part of your whole endeavour and then you for example cite that part as a reference. Sorry, but I think your absolutist statement about books is just silly.

Dude, it was an old TV sitcom joke.

No one was supposed to analyze it.
